Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary (A.R.N. Cremation) - ZionsvilleCaptain Gavin McCallum Rourke passed away on July 24, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Haley Katz Rourke; his daughters, Josephine Mazal (5) and Golda "Goldie" Sloane (3), who were the light of his eyes; his mother, Judith McCallum; father, John Rourke; brothers-in-law, Jacob (Rachel) Katz and Samuel (Malka) Katz; and nephews, Jackson and Ezra Mordechai.
Gavin brought light and laughter wherever he went, known for his goofiness, quick wit, and the way he could lift spirits with just his presence. His sense of humor was a constant, grounding joy to those who knew him, and his personality lit up every room he entered.
He had a deep love for rugby, a game that matched his energy, grit, and team spirit. Gavin was also a devoted soldier, serving with distinction for 17 years in the U.S. Army. He began his career in the elite Ranger Regiment, where he spent a decade before pursuing the Green to Gold program. Always striving to better himself, he rose from E-7—on track for E-8—into the officer ranks, ultimately achieving the rank of Captain. His military service was marked by determination, discipline, and quiet pride.
Gavin’s love for dogs was a constant throughout his life. In 2015, he became a Ranger dog handler and was paired with Iris during his handler course. From the start, they shared an unbreakable bond—one built on trust, loyalty, and mutual respect. Their partnership was one of the most meaningful relationships of his life, and Iris remained close to his heart always.
He found endless joy in playing with his daughters, turning an ordinary day into games, adventures, and laughter-filled memories.
More than anything, Gavin will be remembered for the joy he brought to others and the loyalty he showed to those he loved.
Gavin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Angus and Mickey McCallum and Evelyn and William Rourke; his brother-in-law, Max Katz; and by his beloved Iris, his Dog of War.
Funeral services will be held at Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Funeral Home, 11411 N. Michigan Road, Carmel, IN 46077, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Gavin will be laid to rest with full military honors at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.
A gathering/shiva will take place at Broadmoor Country Club (2155 Kessler Blvd W Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46228) following the burial. It is expected to begin around 2:00 p.m. and will conclude by 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gavin’s memory to America’s VetDogs, honoring his service and his bond with Iris.
