Mrs. Fields had one of the most challenging but important positions in the entire BJU school system: she ensured the kids in the elementary school were fed a filling, wholesome and nutritious meal every day; she ensured my classmates, my siblings and I had lunch. That is a position that is truly never given the recognition in thanks or remuneration that it deserves. To be honest, as a kid I took for granted that lunch would appear at its appointe time in its appointed location because it always was there. All becausend Mrs. Fields was always there.
I remember her working hard and quickly in her white food professional uniform, hairnet, and plastic gloves replentishing trays of food, helping her staff so they could take a break, ensuring the food was kept at a proper temperature, helping sudents knock residue off their trays to stack in the tray-return, sweeping the floor, and ensuring everyting was spick-n-span, glistening and waiting for tomorrow's food service as she turned off the lights in the afternoon.
The Fields family was also a neighbor down the road; we shared a party line way back in the day. When I see her son Alex around town, he has always tells me how is parents are doing and asks about my mother. That sweet spirit is so reflective of his parents. Not too long ago I saw Alex and Mr. Fields in a nearby store. With the huge smile that only Mr. Fields can give, told me Mrs. Fields was comfortable and happy and was being able to get to church. One cold always see love shared by the Fields' when they looked at each other and smiled. I thanked him for the important role Mrs. Fields had in my life and the lives of so many others. Her quiet, happy, loving, kind ministry of nutrition has been successful and fulfilled. She is having a rest and soon, she will be joining Mr. Davis in preparing a huge banquet when we see them and our Jesus. Thank you, Mrs. Fields.
