Gene R. Baker, 91, of Owensboro passed away Saturday, December 13, 2025, peacefully at home with his family by his side. The Ft. Worth, Texas native was born September 1, 1934, to the late Frank and Reba Ware Baker. Gene graduated from Owensboro Senior High School with the class of 1953, playing football for the Red Devils. After graduation, he attended Kentucky Wesleyan College before serving in the Marine Corp Reserves. Gene was employed with Western Kentucky Gas Co. for many years before they became Atmos Energy as the Director of Engineering Services before retiring after forty-two years. He was owner of the Bakers Rack in Wesleyan Park Plaza and a long standing member of First Presbyterian Church and the Men’s Bible Class.

In addition to his parents, Gene was also preceded in death by his sister, Marletta Armstrong.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of seventy years, Mary Dixon Baker; daughter, Anne Leazenby and husband Bryan of Owensboro; son, Gene “Bob” Baker Jr and wife Pam of Dunlap, TN; grandchildren, Phillip (Diana) of Greenwood, SC, Kristen (Stephen) of Atlanta, GA; great grandchildren, Colton, Kara, Adeline, and Emilia; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be 11:00 am Wednesday, December 17 at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and Wednesday from 10:00 until the time of the service at the church. A private entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
