Gastonia Gene Carroll Davis, 75, devoted father and grandfather passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at home. He was born in Gastonia on August 4, 1935 to Zay and Mabel Davis. With the exception of living in Winston-Salem, he lived in Gastonia all of his life. He married Diana Davie Davis of Charlotte in 1956. Mr. Davis was in the band, honor society and graduated from Gastonia High School. Four years later he graduated with an engineering degree from North Carolina State University and was commissioned a lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Army Reserve and achieved the rankof Captain in the Infantry. His professional career included 34 years with the Bell System. He was project manager of the initial CATV system in Gastonia, Charlotte and Bessemer City. While working in Bell South's NC headquarters in Charlotte, he was a director in the financial planning department for new capital projects and associated maintenance expenses. He was involved in the United Way and Chamber of Commerce activities as Bell South's representative. After returning from Bell South, Mr. Davis founded and was president and CEO of the Davis Telecommunications and Consulting Services, Inc., a company that provided temporary technical personnel to telephone companies. Church activities included Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director, Choir President, Deacon and various other assignments. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Diana Morris Davie Davis; sons, Mark E. Davis and wife Susan of Gastonia and Keith A. Davis of Palm Desert, CA; brothers, Bob Davis and wife Doris of Charlotte, Ken Davis and wife Ellen of Hendersonville, NC,, Max Davis of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren, Emily Gray Davis and Hunter Mitchell Davis. Funeral Services for Mr. Davis will be at 2:00 PM, Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors with Rev. Dr. John L. Frye, Jr. and Rev. Mark Tankersley officiating. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 4:00pm until 6:00pm atMcLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia. Memorials may be sent to Gaston Hospice, P. O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054 or to Crisis Assistance Ministries, 805 West Airline Avenue, Gastonia, NC 28052. I have many fond memories of my Uncle Gene. Most especially, the big family Christmas gathering each year in Gastonia. May your memories bring you comfort during this time of great loss. The family will be in my prayers.
