Gene A. Shires

Gene A. Shires, age 74, of Mooresboro, died Monday, May 30, 2016 at the Hospice House of Rutherford. Born on Tuesday, March 31, 1942 in Rutherford County, he was a son to the late Warren Walter Shires and Virginia Aldridge Shires. He was a graduate or Cool Springs High School, class of 1959 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Gene worked for Duke Energy for thirty years before retirement and was a member of Goodes Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed working with electronics and fixing cars. Survivors include his wife of thirty-years, Helen Louise Shires; daughter, Kimberly Tonya Silvers of Rutherfordton; two sons, Tony Melton and wife, Diane of Forest City and Terry Melton and wife, Tammy of Mooresboro; two brothers, Jerry Wayne Shires and wife, Joyce of Danieltown and Alfred Dean Shires and wife, Christy of Sandy Mush. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Chad Hayes officiating. Interment will follow in Eternal Hills Memorial Park with military honors being rendered by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. At other times the family will be gathered at 819 Harrill Dairy Road, Forest City, NC.
