Genevieve Catherine Hannigan Caponi

Genevieve "Jenny" Caponi passed away November 3, 2025, with her daughter and constant companion, Elizabeth, by her side. She was 91.

Born Genevieve Noel Hannigan on June 26, 1934, she grew up in a family of six children in Far Rockaway, Queens. The beach town of her childhood was the setting of her many hilarious anecdotes, and it was at the Far Rockaway Knights of Columbus that she met the love of her life, Samuel Caponi. Together they settled into a home in Lynbrook, N.Y., and raised their children.

Jenny relished taking an active role in her children's lives, volunteering her time as a "Den Mother" at Cub Scouts and serving in the St. Joseph Mother's Club. She was the original "Coffee Talk" mom, providing weekly coffee klatches in the neighborhood, and helped run St. Joseph's Bingo Nights for years. After moving to Greensboro N.C., in the 80s, she was delighted to take computer classes at GTCC and worked as a bookkeeper. Already an enthusiastic bowler, Jenny discovered her true calling in later years as a stellar tennis player. Her skills impressed her coaches, as she continued to play well into her seventies.

An outspoken woman, Jenny impressed upon her children a strong sense of ethics, accountability and community involvement. But overall, Jenny carried with her a profound love of family, animals and nature. Any memory of Jenny is incomplete without a view of her well-cultivated gardens and the many pets that graced her life, with a special mention to cats Goblin, Finnegan, and Jack, and her childhood Samoyed, Boy.

She is survived by her children, Joseph and his wife Elizabeth Caponi and grandchildren Hudson and Samuel, Marie and her husband Michael Schram, Christine and her husband Paul Bruno and grandson Calvin, Elizabeth and her husband David Cook, and Robert Caponi. Throughout family, friends and community, Jenny will be missed dearly.

Jenny is at last reunited with her beloved children, Jane and Michael, who preceded her, and with her eternal love, Samuel, whom she lost in 2019.
