I met Mr Athy in 1972 I believe. I went downtown to his shop on Broad St to get info on upholstery, which I knew nothing of, didnt even have the rocker I wanted. He took me up to the 2nd or 3rd floor, dont remember if there were 3 floors or not anymore. There were all these sofas and chairs etc up there, lots damaged, broken, old, dusty. George told me to look around and see if there was anything that interested me. I found this old beautiful rocker that needed structural repairs, sanding, refinishing, new springs for
seat and back, all kinds of paddings, and of course fabric.
I was concerned that the rocker was very low looking, and George said he realized that and that he could bring it up and out. I fell in love with the fabric samples and finally picked one.
I went back 6 or 8 weeks later and the rocker was the most beautiful thing Id ever seen... I
was 23 at the time I think. I think he had magicians working in the shop. He explained that spring work made the foundation, made whatever the piece of furniture was work and all else came afterwards. I guess springs were formed to shape, then maybe foam was cut to shape the seat and back; it was contoured, not just blocks, or maybe it was done with the padding. Im old now and dont remember, but it looked amazing. With the fabric and trim work finished, it was an example of what talent and craft combined can produce.
Sorry Ive gone one so much about this but late as it is in getting sent, I want his family to know my memories of George Athy, a helpful friendly master of what he did. Im so sorry hes gone.

My wife and I have known the Athy family for many years, especially Richard, who was my patient. They have always been our "family upholsterers." We learned of his passing while we were out of town and we are sorry we could not attend his final rites. We know Mr. Athy will be missed. Please accept our condolences to Richard and the rest of the family.

Mr. Athy had a wonderful gift and talent for making simple pieces of wood look so marvelous and beautiful. Over the years no one has ever visited my home without making a wonderful remark about this beautiful chair I have in my living room. I look at it every day and marvel over what Mr. Athy did to a broken down piece of wood.
My best wishes are extended to the family during this time of great loss.
