I am saddened to hear of this. My best and most memorable class was his "Things in History". He was a true scholar of the highest order. I would see him in years afterwards and he would always have a reading recommendation and would tell me of the latest topic (always wide ranging and novel) he was at the time pursuing. Brilliant man who seemed to approach life and learning with an unquenchable, childlike sense of wonder and delight. Academia, and the world, need more like him.
