George Edward Buckner was born on Monday, August 11,1941, to Richard Buckner(1989) and
Elva Buckner (2007) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He departed this earth on Thursday, August 15,
2024.George was one of five children: Richard J. Buckner II(1998),Ernest Buckner(1935),
Beatrice L. Smith (1982),Margaret L. Buckner(1940), and his surviving sibling, Robert T.
Buckner.He was the father of Glenn E.Buckner (Joanne Smith) and a proud grandfather to
Joanne Buckner and Gabriel Buckner, who were the light of his life.
George attended and graduated from Schenley High School(Pittsburgh, PA).At18, he set off for
New York, New York,where he pioneered hair and skin care. In 1970,George
founded Hair Fashions East, a premier hair salon in the heart of NYC servicing many high profile
clientele in the city. As his career and experience expanded,so did his exposure. His hair and skin
care advice appeared in premier fashion, beauty, and lifestyle publications such as Essence,
Harper's Bazaar, and Modern Salon. He was also featured in two books: Total Makeover: Body,
Beauty, Spirit by Patricia M. Hinds and Self-Seduction: Your Ultimate Path to Inner and Outer
Beauty by Mikki Taylor, the fabulous former Essence beauty editor. George presented and
lectured on hair and skin care at numerous women's conferences and industry trade show
seminars, including The Essence Women Shaping the World Conference.
Highly regarded for his innovative hair care solutions and personalized approach to hairstyling,
George received many international and national awards, including two gold medals at the Women's Hairstyling Festival in Birmingham,England, and the Image Maker Award from the
Association of Black Charities in New York City. Respected by his peers, he served as an
educator for the Nioxin Research Laboratories and served as President of the Société Francaise
de Biosthetique, USA section for four years. George worked closely with the New York City
School of Career Development, teaching classes and establishing co-op and internship programs
at his salon. He also sat on the Advisory Council for Career and Technical Education for the
New York City Department of Education.
When George wasn't working, he enjoyed life's adventures and experiences. He traveled the
world, enjoyed weekly salsa dancing, annual scuba diving trips, skiing trips with his son, and fine
dining, but nothing compared to his love for his family. He had a big heart and only wished
everyone connected to him the best. He is loved and will be missed by friends & family.
