George Washington Burns, 93, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, in Hobbs, New Mexico. A devoted family man, George's life was marked by integrity, warmth, honesty, and kindness.

George was born in Carey, Texas, on March 30, 1932, to John Henry and Viola Burns. He grew up with his sisters, Elizabeth Wilson, and Juanita Hunter, who preceded him in death. At Carey High School, he was a basketball star, but his greatest love was his high school sweetheart, Ellen Burns, née O’Daniel. They married in 1950, and soon after, they moved to Oil Center, NM, where George began a 35-year career with El Paso Natural Gas. He and Ellen raised their two daughters at the camp in Oil Center, and their life was filled with good friends, game nights, and a close-knit community. Later, they lived in Eunice for many years and eventually retired to Hobbs in 1990.

Outside of his career, George found joy in simple pleasures. He was an avid woodworker and gardener, often acting as Ellen's assistant on many craft projects, a role he cherished in retirement. Among his greatest joys was making videos of his family; well before others were commonly using camcorders, George embraced the technology to create cherished memories that will bring comfort and smiles for years to come.

George's faith was central throughout his life, and he was a devoted member of Crosswinds Church. This strong foundation guided him in all things and was evident in the way he treated others—with compassion, humility, and unwavering love.

George shared a 73-year marriage with his wife, Ellen Burns, until her passing. Together, they raised two daughters: Kay Culp and Ranae Burns. His legacy continues through them and through his grandchildren—Tracy Brey (Jeremy Brunk) and Michelle Weinstein (Eric)—and great-grandchildren Zach Brey (Megan), Riley Weinstein, and William Weinstein. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law and good friend, Crawford Culp.

Those who knew George remember his quick wit, passion for the University of Texas Longhorns, devotion to family, and his steady, faithful presence. His legacy of love will live on for generations.

George's life will be celebrated with family at a private service. His family would like to thank the wonderful staff at BeeHive Home Care of Hobbs, who made the last two years of his life comfortable and filled with compassion, dignity, and love. He was so thankful for each of you, as are we.

May the memory of George Burns bring peace and comfort to all who were blessed to know him.
