George Dunlap Obituary

George Heyward Dunlap, Jr.

November 18, 1940 - January 27, 2024

Rock Hill, South Carolina - George Heyward Dunlap, Jr., age 83, of Rock Hill, SC, went to his eternal home with his Lord & Savior on January 27, 2024. He was the son of the late George Heyward Dunlap & the late Franky Wickliffe Dunlap. He was born on November 18, 1940. George was a caring husband, a loyal friend and a passionate individual.

George is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mary Ann Dunlap, his son Heyward Dunlap (Ashley), his daughter Ainsley Dunlap Goldstein (Jeff). He is also survived by his step-daughter Renee Reed (Michael), and pre-deceased by his step-daughter Donna B. Rabon. George had four grandchildren - George and Claiborne Dunlap, and Jane and Annie Goldstein, as well as four step-grandchildren - Harley, Jamie, Taylor, and Jordan. He also leaves behind six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. George is also survived by his brother, Dr. William Dunlap, and sister, Franky McMahan. Additionally, George considered Joe Duncan as his second son.

George attended Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, where he played on the state championship golf team and was well known for his driving length off the tee. He later graduated from NC State University with a degree in Engineering.

He started his career as an engineer at Milliken Textiles in Spartanburg, SC. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to open his own business, Venetian Marble. Throughout his life, George owned various businesses, but his true passion was golf, which eventually led him to become the owner/operator of Pinetuck Golf Club. For the past 40 years, George dedicated his time to the course, mowing fairways, chatting with fellow golfers, and making hot dogs "all the way" in the kitchen.

George attended Calvary Baptist Church when physically able and enjoyed watching the service on TV every Sunday morning.

In his free time, George loved organizing golf trips with friends and family, including "The King's Invitational" in Florida and many others in the US and overseas. He once made a double eagle at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh on the first hole - a few months after Arnold Palmer had accomplished the same feat. He was a proud member of the NC State Wolfpack Club and a Masters patron for over 60 years. When he wasn't on the golf course, he delighted in cooking gourmet meals for his loved ones and once travelled to cook for Tour golf professionals during the British Open. He had a personal relationship with every employee and department head at Harris Teeter. He also loved playing guitar and singing his favorite John Prine songs. While a KA at NC State, he and his brother Billy once had the opportunity to play with the Kingston Trio after one of their concerts. After picking and singing "The Ballad of Jesse James," the Kingston Trio's next album included that song. A lover of animals, George cherished his cats, Chance and Baby.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at 4:00 pm at Calvary Baptist Church, located at 830 North Jones Avenue in Rock Hill. Visitation will be at 3:00 pm at the church before the service. Pastor Reggie Hopkins will officiate.

We give special thanks to Visiting Angels, especially Dianne Hefney and Hospice Community Care.

Memorials can be made to Calvary Baptist Church.

We are all so very sorry for your loss... We send love and prayers to each of you during this difficult time. I am so glad that I was able to meet Big George and know what an amazing man and father and husband and grandfather he was (and how funny he could be) and just everything about him! He will be missed, but we know he is now in no pain and is with the Lord!
