George A. Dykes, 73, passed away on July 8, 2024.
George was born on October 21, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the eighth of ten children born to Odis Sr. and Helen Dykes,. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving on a ship near the Mediterranean.
On July 19, 1969, George married his high school sweetheart, Sharon and together, they were blessed with two children. They were married for 26 years until her passing. George found love later in life, spending the past 17 years, with his wife Nancy. George worked for many years in commercial tire sales, and even after retiring, he continued to stay active with various jobs. He enjoyed being a tour guide at the Harley Davidson plant and Steamboat Arabia, sharing his extensive knowledge and passion with visitors.
An avid golfer, George also worked as a marshall at Winterstone Golf Course. He delighted his friends and family with his wealth of fun facts about Kansas City and its mob history. George will be remembered for his warmth, enthusiasm, and the joy he brought to those around him.
George is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; parents; five sisters and two brothers. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Nancy Greenlee; children, Charles” Chuck” (Jessica) Dykes and Charlotte (Daryll Gilliam) Padgett; grandchildren, Kirsten Padgett, Casey Elaine Dykes, and (baby-to-be) Nolan Dykes; step-children, Julie (Dr. Matt) Lenz and Lisa (John) Morris; grandchildren, Tate, Addison, and Jamison Lenz and Jacob, Luke, and Camden Morris; brother, Steven Dykes; sister, Toni Grewing; and numerous extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home on July 20th, with visitation beginning at 1:00pm, funeral at 2:00pm, followed immediately by graveside with military honors, and reception with refreshments. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope House or St. Michael's Veterans Home.
