George Figel, age 93, passed away on March 23, 2024. He was born on February 9, 1931 in Akron to the late John and Mary Figel. George was a 1949 graduate of Garfield High School, where he was the Valedictorian. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1953 and Master's Degree in 1961 from the University of Akron. In between those degrees, he served our country in the United States Navy. George taught for over 30 years in the Barberton School District. After his retirement, he was a volunteer for over 35 years for the American Red Cross receiving many awards for his outstanding service, including The Most Treasured Volunteer. George loved to travel the United States and abroad and hiking was a passion. He enjoyed watching and attending sporting events of all kinds and crocheted many afghan blankets which he loved to give as gifts. George was extremely proud of his Ukrainian heritage.
Preceded in death by his siblings, Stella (Stan) Buda, Ann (John) Rousomanoff, Peter (Verna) Figel, John Figel and Jean (Ted) Kanter; he is survived by his many nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to St. Luke's Portage Lakes Retirement Community, Akron General Hospital, Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center, and Dr. Waleed Nemer for all of their loving care they gave George.
Per George's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will not be any services. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Red Cross.
