George Graves Obituary

Graves, Jr., George Arthur

George "Bud" A. Graves, Jr., 88 years old, was born in Lackawanna, NY, in 1937 to his parents, George A. Graves, Sr., and Iva Winnie (Goodrich) Graves. He grew up in Mayville, NY. He graduated in 1955 from Mayville High School where he played baseball, basketball, volleyball, and golf. Bud played farm-league baseball for the Stockton, NY semi-pro team. He attended Alfred University in Alfred, NY and graduated in 1960 with a degree in Ceramic Engineering. He served in the US Army at Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County, NJ, from 1960 to 1962. Bud began working at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) in 1968 and obtained his Master's Degree in Materials Engineering from UD in 1972. He retired from UDRI in 2001, and continued to work as a consultant until 2005. During his tenure, Bud and his colleagues were awarded many patents and grants for their work on ceramics/materials projects in healthcare and in aerospace. Bud died on August 14, 2025. He is survived by his long-time partner, Sheila Liskany, sister Yvonne Dudley, three children-Connie Lowery, Terry Graves Strieter, and Michael Graves and their spouses, David Lowery, John Strieter, and Karen Graves, grandchildren, Lauren Meyer (Jason), Brandon Lowery (Alison), and Ellia Strieter, and great grandsons Mason and Carter Meyer, as well as his former wife and life-long friend, Mary C. Graves. Besides his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bob Monnig, his brother-in-law, Merv Dudley, and his niece, Jackie Dudley. Bud was a voracious reader. He loved history, science and sports and having in-depth conversations on a variety of topics. Many friends have indicated that he was a "human encyclopedia". Bud loved to travel and went on many trips with his family and friends over the years. He loved his hometown of Mayville, NY and its beautiful Chautauqua Lake where he enjoyed fishing. Bud loved the Cleveland Browns football and UD Flyers basketball teams and was an avid attendee of their games for many years. He also loved his family, his friends at UDRI, Milano's and The Hickory, neighbors, and the many people who have been a part of his long life. His family wishes to thank the staff at Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio (RIO), the staff at Miami Valley Hospital, and the caregivers at Hospice of Dayton for their kind and compassionate care. A Celebration of Life service is being planned for Bud where family and friends will be welcome. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the Hospice of Dayton at www.ohioshospice.org/give/ and/or the Project LIFE program run by the Greene County Educational Service Center at https://www.greeneesc.org/Donate.aspx.

Terry, Connie and Mike, and family ~
Thinking of you as you celebrate the life of your dear Dad.(and grandpa). I still recall seeing him at Milano´s over the years and his twinkle in his eye as he smiled at all of Terry´s friends in town for one of our many reunions. I´m sure there will be many memories that will come flooding back --as time marches on. Love, Patti Tressler Doerr and Tim Doerr UD class of `89

Bud and Sheila were always there as support for my late husband and I for over 50 years. .UDRI brought us altogether and Bud will never be forgotten. He was family to me. I know he's in heaven with friends and family and he will be missed by many. I am grateful that he is no longer suffering and I pray for strength for Sheila and his family to carry on without him. We all love you, Bud! Go Flyers and Cleveland Browns!
