George Patrick Hickey

George Patrick Hickey, 89, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
Funeral services will be held 3:00PM Saturday, July 13, 2024 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Jonathan Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00PM Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the funeral home, 3874 Gentian Blvd Columbus, GA 31907.
George was born October 7, 1934 in Troy, New York to the late George and Alice (O'Neil) Hickey. He married the love of his life, Alma Jean Hickey, September 3, 1954, and they were married for 67 years. George joined the U.S. Army February 1953 serving several years. Following his military service he became a volunteer fire fighter in Jacksonville Florida, working his way up to become Duval County fire chief. In the late 1960's, he began working with the Naval Air Station in Sanford Florida as a member of the fire department crash crew. He worked with various naval air fire stations, retiring in 1989 as Fire Chief at the Orlando Naval Training Center.
George was an avid roller skater and enjoyed morning gatherings with friends for many years following his retirement.
Other than his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Hickey, sister, Mildred (William) Callan, sister, Ellen Bruno, sister, Catherine Hickey, brother-in-law, Ronald Elliott, nephew, Paul Elliott, daughter-in-law, Patricia (Cappabianco) Hickey; nephew, Timothy Rooney.
George is survived by his sons, Jerry (Margaret) Hickey, Cliff Hickey, Steve Hickey, sister, Mary (Ray) Petrisin, four grandchildren, Loni (John) DeVincenzo, Christopher (Ashley) Hickey, Kelli (Matthew) Makaryk, Ryan Hickey, six great grandchildren, Kyleigh Makaryk, Hailey DeVincenzo, Cali Hickey, Giuliana DeVincenzo, Andrew Makaryk, Austin Makaryk, nieces, Cynthia Telep, Doreen (Jim) Fiebel, Donna Rooney, Jeanne (Sam) Falgout, nephews, Donald Del Nero Jr, Richard (Patty) Elliott, sister-in-law, Joyce Elliott, brother-in-law, Alfred Bruno and several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
