George M. Horey

1932 - 2023

George M. Horey, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather began his eternal life with the Lord on September 3, 2023.

George was born in the Bronx, NY on July 21, 1932 to George and Mary Horey and grew up there with his brother Thomas. He never forgot his roots and remained a fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants through thick and thin.

George answered a calling to serve God, attended St. Joseph's Seminary and was ordained on May 31, 1958. And while he ultimately left the priesthood he remained an active member of the Church. He was a Past President of the Parrish Council at St. Benedicts in Holmdel, NJ and St. Nicholas in Virginia Beach. He was a Eucharistic Minster for many years and enjoyed providing pastoral care for the sick. He was a 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus at Holy Family in Virginia Beach. At Holy Family he worked with the Food Pantry, Haiti Committee and was a founding member of the Prison Ministry.

After he left the priesthood, George married the love of his life, Kathleen on November 27, 1968, and later adopted two children, Carolyn and Michael.

George worked for 26 years at the Navy Exchange Command, holding various positions in Virginia, New York, and Puerto Rico. After his retirement he served on the Board of Directors and as the President of the Navy Exchange Retired Employees Association for many years.

George was predeceased by his wife Kathleen, his parents and brother, Thomas. He is survived by his children Carolyn (Steve), Michael (Alex) and his granddaughter Hailey. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass of the Resurrection will be offered at The Church of the Holy Family, Virginia Beach on September 15, 2023 at 11am. Visitation will be in the Chapel at Holy Family one hour before the service. Interment will follow mass at the Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 N Great Neck Rd, Virginia Beach. A reception will be held in the family room at The Church of the Holy Family after the Interment.
