George Franklin Hughes, of Rolla, Missouri, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the age of 90.

George was born on May 14, 1935, to the late Louis Jr. and Ollie Rae Hughes. He was united in marriage to Miss Rosemary Oberkrom on December 27, 1958 this union was blessed with three children.

George proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1958–1960. After returning home to Rolla, he resumed his work at Callens Market, where he had been employed prior to his military service. He worked there for more than 40 years, always ready to help customers with the flowers and vegetable plants for which Callens was so well known.

George loved to fish, especially in the rivers and streams of the local area. He often took his family along, and together they created many cherished memories on the water. He was also a big sports fan who especially enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball on television. Each year during his vacation, he made it a point to take his family to a home game. George also loved basketball and attended many Rolla Bulldogs games over the years.

A man who enjoyed the outdoors, George spent countless hours working in his yard-mowing, trimming trees and shrubs, and especially tending to his large garden. He delighted in sharing the bountiful harvest with friends, family, and neighbors. He also enjoyed picking blackberries and spending time outside whenever he could.

Above all, George dearly loved his family. He treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren, especially when they gathered for meals-and perhaps a cold Stag beer. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, and he will be lovingly missed by all who knew and loved him.

George is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Rosemary Hughes, of the home; his children, Terry Hughes of St. James, MO, Tammy Baker of Rolla, MO, and Hope (Darrell) Jones of Rolla, MO; grandchildren Casey (Caleb) Light, Randy (Keagan) Hughes, Erin (Nick) Kveton, Jared Baker, Wesley Baker, Andrew Jones, and Tiffany Jones; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brothers Louis, Don, and Audrey Hughes; sisters Edith Hughes and Karen Rodgers; and daughter-in-law Lois Hughes.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Rolla Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary, with Pastor Larry Richardson officiating. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Chapel on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until service time.

Memorials are appreciated to the Hughes Cemetery. Cards are available at all James & Gahr locations.
