George Junco Obituary

George Junco passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 16th of November, after a courageous battle with cancer. A beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, George loved life and radiated positivity. George never met a stranger and had an unparalleled zest for life. He maintained his characteristic mischievous grin right to the end, playfully teasing his family and nurses in his final days. George was born in Havana, Cuba, on May 6, 1956, the cherished middle child of Laudelina Caridad Montano and Rene Tomas Junco Garcia. The family immigrated initially to Caracas, Venezuela, and eventually to New York, New York, before settling in Dallas, Texas. As a child, George was known for his magnetic personality, strong work ethic and spirited nature, traits he carried on throughout his life. George was a life-long learner as evidenced by his many degrees. George graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Texas at Dallas. He also earned a Masters in Business Administration, Masters of Science and a Masters of Education from East Texas A&M. Though he initially built a business career in Finance and Accounting, he found his calling in Education. George was happiest as an educator, initially teaching 4th grade for ESL children at Back Elementary in Rowlett, Texas, to ultimately becoming a most beloved Principal at Story Elementary and then Cheatham Elementary, both in Allen, Texas. He was loved by his teachers, students and parents alike and was truly happiest in the classroom. George is survived by his wife of 39 years, Tambri Junco, who selflessly took the role of chief nurse and caregiver as he valiantly fought his cancer diagnosis. A chance meeting on a cruise turned into four decades of bliss with Tambri, whether it was dancing on a Friday night at home, cooking one of his famous Cuban meals or spending time on the lake in Kentucky, he never wanted to leave Tambri's side. Tambri and George also loved the ocean and scuba diving, completing over 500 dives together around the world. George is also survived by his daughter, Kristy Junco Bradshaw (Chris); his grandchildren, Preston Bradshaw, Pierce Bradshaw and Camilla Bradshaw; his brother, Rene Junco (Carol); his sister, Mary Matallana (Ernie); and his former wife, Maritza Withrow (Steve). George was preceded in death by his parents, Laudelina and Rene Junco. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life from 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, November 22nd, at The Briar Club, 2603 Timmons Lane in Houston. In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed in George's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a local animal shelter of your choice or any charity that is meaningful to you. The family would like to recognize MD Anderson Cancer Center for their care, most especially Dr. Eric K. Singhi, who showed the utmost respect and compassion to George. Because of Dr. Singhi and his team, George was able to spend valuable months with his family.

I will never forget the day that I interviewed for the librarian job at Story. I was nervous and really wanted this position. George asked several probing questions and then asked the big one: "Do you like to have fun?" He wanted teachers who loved their students and found joy in their teaching position. Our Story faculty was a family. George gave me a chance to share my love of books with students at Story Elementary and the opportunity to establish Cheatham Elementary library. He was a great principal who led with conviction and joy. Rest in peace, George.

Yesterday

George was my principal for my first 10 years of teaching at Story Elementary. He always had a smile on his face, and he was never happier than when he was around kids. He would come down to the gym and jump right into our game with us. He would spend the entire field day outside, hosing down kids every time they would come near! I remember him doing outside crosswalk duty, rain or shine, every single day of the year. Nothing made him happier than seeing the parents and students at drop off and pick up. He was truly a man of the people. He also loved his family more than anything. That was evident in the way he lived his life. He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Junco was the principal I knew the most. I was always excited the opportunities I would get to talk with him whether I was in school or when it was after I graduated. He then turned from great principal to great friend. I'm going to miss him so much and send my deepest condolences to his family. Thank you Mr. Junco.

Tambri prayer for you and the family. I remember George at the family reunion and introducing us to the Drone. I enjoyed watching him as much as the Drone with his big smile. He was a teacher trying to explain what it was capable of to me . Such a kind nice person he was. With love to you, Sue.

Sending my condolences to George´s family and lifting them in my prayers. I hadn´t seen George in several years and didn´t realize he was sick. I have fond memories of him when we were administrators in Allen during the same time period. It doesn´t surprise me at all that he was still smiling and joking around in his last days. He was always such a fun guy ... with the greatest smile! Rest in peace, George.

When I met George he was looking for a PE asst in April of that school year because his present one got another job. At that time I was a stay at home mom and had been for 13 years, one of his questions to me was what kind of family I grew up in? when I told him I was one of seven kids he knew he had the perfect person to be able to work in his gym. At the end of that school year he was told he would not have the funds to hire me back he was devastated.
I then get a call from him during the summer and he said " I want you back please tell me you don´t have another job and you can come back" the rest is history I worked for him for 9 years at Story and followed him to Cheatham for another year he was the BEST not just as a principal but a whole around person. He always had my back and I will appreciate everything he ever did for me I love you George and will be praying for you and your whole family

George was hands-down the best principal ever! The kids would light up to see him, but not more than he lit up seeing them. He truly knew what was important in life. When we opened Cheatham Elementary, it was my first year of teaching and there a was required work day. I hesitated to ask for the day off because I knew how important it was. I ended up telling George that that was the day I needed to take my son to college for his freshman year. George told me that he didn´t want to see me anywhere near Cheatham that day, because I needed to have that special day with my son. I´m forever grateful for that.

The world will miss knowing that George is here but will be forever changed and deeply honored that he was once here.
I did not know George for long but upon meeting him, his beautiful smile and impish eyes gave it all away. I had always heard of this man, George Junco, who was THE BEST principal to work for-if you could get into his school. I eventually did get to work with him for an unfortunately short period of time, at Cheatham Elementary School. All the rumors were true! He was a genuinely wonderful man and he will be missed. Via con Dios!!!

He was the proudest father and loved you so much Kristy! Thinking of you, Tambri and all who loved him. May his memory be a blessing and the stories you tell of him keep his spirit close.

George is so fondly remembered by our family and so many others when he was the principal at Story Elementary. I recall children´s faces lighting up and getting excited when they would see him! He knew how to connect with people and spread joy. I know Heaven has gained an angel.
Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers-
