CHARLOTTE – Mr. George Vasilios Katsanos, born April 4, 1938, took his last worldly breath on Saturday, March 22, 2025, and began his next journey with God. He was born to the late Vasilios and Fotini Katsanos (nee Groumbas) and raised in the village of Agia Vlaherina in the province of Evrytania Greece.
George immigrated from Greece to Australia with his brothers, Panagioti and Dimitrios. He later joined his brother, Kosta, in the United States in 1966. On January 21, 1968, he married his devoted wife, Christina Anastasis. Her commitment to George's welfare was consistent throughout their lives together. She was with him until the last second of his worldly life.
In turn he was forever committed to her, his children and grandchildren's well-being.
George was a kind and generous person with his family and countless strangers. His compassion for people in need was well known. He owned Park Lanes Restaurant and was featured on a local talk show, Top of the Day, for his famous onion rings. He was a proud American immigrant-citizen and would sometimes introduce himself as George Katsanos of the United States of America. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and volunteered with the Greek Night which later became the Greek Festival.
The family would like to uplift his wife for how she tirelessly took care of George in his final years and days. The same must be done for his oldest son, Vasilios, who moved in with George and Christina to support everyone's needs.
We would also like to thank his primary care physician, Dr. Carol Zoret, and the entire team at Atrium Health for their excellent care.
The family knows that he will be reunited with his deceased kin and ancestors, but especially look forward to his reunion with Eftihia Anastasis, his preceding mother-in-law. Meanwhile his family and other surviving kin and friends will deeply miss his humor, infectious smile, and laughter, and singing of Greek folk songs. We love you baba. May your spirit and memory be eternal.
George is survived by his wife, Christina; four children, Vasilios, Fotini, Eftihia, and Christos and wife, Erica; grandchildren, Christina, Leonidas, Anastassia, Nicoletta, Georgia, and Paraskevi; his godchildren, Dimitra Zangotsis and Spiro Katsanos and numerous nephews and nieces. Also surviving are his brothers, Christodoulos, and Kosta and his wife, Chrisoula; sister, Maria Politis; sisters-in-laws, Katerini and his brother-in-law, Demetrios Anastasis, his wife Margarita, and their son, Christos Anastasis in Athens, Greece.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Panagioti and his wife, Athanasia, and Dimitrios; sisters, Fotini and her husband, Spiro Katsanos, Vasiliki Doulaveris and her husband, Paul and sister-in-law, Penelope Katsanos.
Funeral services for George will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorials may be offered in memory of George to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Foundation, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 or to Panagia Proussotisa at Elatos Park, 125 Jim Parker Road, Monroe, NC 28110.
