George Kissell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2008.
PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) — George Kissell, a former major league coach who worked with the St. Louis Cardinals organization since 1940, has died. He was 88.

Kissell died Tuesday at Tampa General Hospital, Pinellas Park Police Capt. Sanfield Forseth said. Police said Kissell's daughter was driving her parents Monday night when she apparently ran a red light and was hit by another car. His daughter and wife survived, and the other driver had minor injuries.

Kissell was a major league coach from 1969-75. He was a senior field coordinator for player development at the time of his death.

My Dad, Warren Auchy Auchenbach played with a George on the Hamilton Redwings in 1940-41. I met George and Ginny many times in Florida and when he was in Philly. A great guy and gentleman.

George was great for baseball and life. His anologies and stories are still remembered and told. His first appearance with me was in Erie Pa., word was he was at the game but we could not find him, we guessed he was on top of a light pole watching us play. He called me Prez, you better come early to see me pitch( It meant I may not last long pitching)
He often bragged about one of his grand sons, he would hit a tire 25 times every morning before school. Always teaching with a story!
God bless his family and thanks for sharing him with us.

I was so sad to learn of George's passing. It has been a long, long time since I have seen the family but have fond memories. I am also posting a picture I found of George and Ginny when they were visiting Kay in Watertown. I would love to hear from the family [email protected]

The Kissell family, please accept my deepest sympathies. George took time to work with all who wanted to get better in the game of baseball. I will cherish the memories I had of him while I played briefly with the Cardinals in the mid-90's. I remember first meeting George in Pittsfield, MA and it was one of my first games as a minor leaguer. I can remember the baseball god-like presence he had on me as he spoke to all of us about the ins and outs of the game. The good Lord blessed him with the talent of playing, coaching and teaching this great game of baseball and he displayed these talents daily.

May God give you comfort and joy with all the memories he left for you to remember him by. God Bless.

To the Kissell Family,
Ginny and George were my wonderful next door neighbors for 20 years in St. Pete. George was always a loving, honest, and caring man. With his humor, he'd love to play little tricks on us--like moving flower pots around on the patio, or putting crackers in our shoes. When we'd say "Georgie?", he'd just grin. He never bragged about baseball accomplishments, but rather was a truly humble person. Surely there's baseball in heaven with George. We sadly miss him and are honored to have had him as a treasured friend.

George was an outstanding baseball man, more importantly he was a man of great character. He was dedicated to God, family , and country. He attended mass everyday and he loved and was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He served his country with honor. A great role model.
It was my good fortune to know him and work with him for the last 30 yrs. My condolences to the entire family.

We were a proud bunch of relations who knew our cousin "George", was a St. Louis Cardinal. If he ever knew anyone related to him was in town for a game, he had a way of making us feel extra special. He was as proud to know us as we were to know him. He is one of our great Legends. Plus, how much greater can you be coming from Watertown, NY?? It is a sad time for many of the "greats" it seems these days...Love to Virginia and kids.

I met George and his lovely wife Jenny when I was a child, as they lived next door to my grandparents in St. Pete's. Though I only had a handful of conversations with him, it was apparent that he was a man of integrity, compassion, talent, and a marvelous sense of humor that made those around him comfortable. (His specialty was to hang old shoes on the door knob of my grandparents' home as his 'calling card' when he knew we were visiting.) His legacy, both public and personal, will live on. We keep you in our prayers.

Wow, I am truly touched to hear what wonderful things people from all over the world had to say about gramp!

Ten years ago I met what I still to this day concern the most amazing man ever made. I have ever known someone to be so compassionate about everything in their life weather it was family, baseball, or carrying out the trash. I was amazed at how humble, loving, and caring of a man he was. He is my husband’s grandfather; I see George in Mike more and more everyday. I am proud to say that am able to call this man family.

Gramp, Mike and I love and miss you so much! Your guidance and wisdom will be with us always. You have shown us the true definition of life, love, and family

This is a very, very sad day for me! I am a former minor league player in the Cardinal organization and I can't tell you how much George Kissell did for me as a person on and off the diamond. I have been fortunate enough in my life to have had some great leaders starting with my father and then my high school coach and was truley blessed to have George show me to be as sharp as I could be as a player and a person. Today I am an educator and working on my Masters degree.....its still very important to me I do not let those three men down and I thank George so much for that great influence he had on me as a youngster!!

To the Kissell Family:

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Our mom was a huge baseball fan, and we are sure that she discussed him over the years. No doubt George had a positive influence on many and will be missed by all.

We are so fortunate to have the promises of the holy bible as a hope for the future. Those promises include the possibility of being reunited with our loved ones who have died to life on a righteous, peaceful earth.

It is our hope that you find some comfort in these bible-based promises and the many others that will be realized under God's Kingdom.

We love & miss you!

No bond is greater than that of a child & parent. My deepest condolences go out to you and your family. Kay your Father was like a father to me. I watched your family grow up at Al Lang. I seated you everytime you came to the game. Always behind home plate by the dougout. I remember asking "The Professor" for his autograph and he laughed at me and his eyes sparkled as he looked through his glasses. I will always remember "The Professor". He was part of my life for over 17years. My prayers go out to your family. May the Lord Bless you.

What is there to say or feel that hasn't been said or felt...about our dear George Kissell? I spoke to Mr. Baseball a few days before...(the hurt is too deep to accept the tragedy)...and his last letter arrived
recently. He stated he will wait until dear Ginny took her nap...to read my novel One Strike You're Out! Whether or not he had the opportunity...what matters is that it was in his possession. My sons will never forget ice fishing for pickeril
with George at Sackets Harbor. I
send my condolences to Ginny and the Kissell family. George will always

Dear KK, Dick, and Mrs Kissell. I was so saddened to hear the news of Mr Kissell's death. I happened to be in Sackets visiting my mother when we heard. It was so difficult to sit in mom's kitchen and look over at your old house. Remember Kick the Can, ice skating, playing monopoly?

My sister and I remember George when he came to Sarasota to coach the Cardinal's entry in the Gulf Coast League in the 60's. My mother and sister had the good fortune to meet Virginia and K and sit with them in the stands during the games while I sold concessions in the stands. It has been many years since that time, but we have never forgotten George and the influence that he had on those young players in their first venture into the world of Major League Baseball.

To the Kissell Family,
We were very saddened to hear the passing of George. He had a profound impact on my career, which started in the Cardinal Organization in 1971. He also coached my older brother, LeRon. George gave me a new catchers glove in Little Rock in 1977 for catching a good game and my son Derrek who was two years old at the time threw a ball and hit George in the locker room and George said that kid has a great arm, he will play in the big leagues, and that's where he is. I have talked about George my whole career and taught hundreds of kids what he taught me. He will be missed.
With regards to the family,

I never met George Kissell, but I wrote to him 2 or 3 years ago about a baseball book I was working on.

What an honor it was to receive a short note in return from a man who did so much for the greatest game of all.

His family should all be proud to be part of the Kissell legacy, and I wish them all the strength to carry on.

My brother Mack and I were batboys for the Cardinals in the 80's. We both learned so much from George, even though we were young, and he had his grandson around the clubhouse, Tommy, and Mike? George treated by brother and I like we were his own kid, his own player.
He would include us in every drill to make sure we knew what he was teaching the major leaguers. I live in Boston, and the Red Sox just retired Johnny Pesky's number, I thought of George during the ceremony, and told many friends, that nobody knew as much about baseball or cared for the love the game as George. I can still hear his voice right now, "Wheres.... OLD Willie McGee?? Wheres old Ricketts?
He was awesome, and I always saw him on church every weekend. Baseball lost good man, but we all lost a great veteran, great american.
R.I.P. George, now go tell Ted Williams what was wrong with his stance. St. Louis should retire your number.
