George was known as Georgie within the family . I don´t think I ever called him George. We were relatively close in age, I was younger by about 4 years. We were like 2 peas in a pod. There was a bond between us from early on in life. He was kind of like the older brother I never had. He loved cars and we would sit for hours looking at the various pictures of the cars. Challenging each other to name the make, model and year. We would sit and dream about the day when we would have our own cars. He was into making car models. Some of you might not even know what I´m talking about. In case you don´t know, back in the late sixties, putting together plastic models of cars was all the rage. Some of the more complicated models actually had wheels that you could steer and headlights and tail lights that would light up. It was quite tedious work putting all those small pieces together and making sure that you didn´t get any of the glue on the plastic parts. When we weren´t doing that, we often drew pictures of our favorite cars, right down to the finest detail. We also built things with our erector sets. Sometimes, we would save our pennies and get one of those airplane gliders that you would put together. I think they were a nickel. If you were lucky and saved up a quarter, you could get one that had a propeller that spun with the help of a rubber band. Yes those were some of the things that we did back in the day. A lot of hands on and creative stuff.
On the weekends he would sleep over and i was a giggler. Always laughing at one thing or another. I remember for some reason I was especially a giggler at bedtime. My mother would say get to sleep, which only made us laugh all the more.
When he became old enough to drive, his first car was a 1964 Cadillac that he bought from my uncle. It was a beautiful car . It is my favorite year for the Caddy´s.
Even though he had that car, it never stopped him from looking at others that he could possibly get. So he used to tell me to look in the newspaper during the day while he was at work and let him know if there´s any possible deals close by that we can go look at.. we spent many hours going to Private owners and dealerships. We had always seen Reedmans ( a car dealership in Pennsylvania) claiming to have every make and model vehicle. So one day we drove there to see the place. Our parents never knew where we went that day. Lol
The funny thing was it always seemed like there was something to make us laugh about everything that we did.
One time we bought a Volkswagen bug for around $125. I had just got my license and so he said he would drive the Volkswagen back home and for me to follow him with his brand new Chevelle.. which happened to be the car that he taught me how to drive in. So we made it back home and went to go fill up the Volkswagen with gas.. he pulled up the emergency brake as to kind of skid with the car and the whole handle came out of the floor.. needless to say this set off a fit of laughing with me. He wasn´t too thrilled about this at first, but then looked at me and he started laughing too.. It was just a continuation of the types of things that happened all the time that made us laugh..
Then there was a time when we went to a garage sale and there was this nice hanging lamp that I was interested in purchasing. So I picked it up by the chain and the glass part of it must´ve been loose and it went crashing to the ground and broke into 1 million pieces. So I apologized to the woman and felt a little uncomfortable so I said let´s get out of here. Well, we could barely make it to the car before we looked at each other and just burst out laughing..
There were so many stories that I could tell you that I could be here for hours. There are so many fond memories that I have , right from my childhood days on up..
Thank you for being the big brother I never had . You will be missed. Rest in heavenly peace, Georgie.. rest in heavenly peace.
