George Roe Lewis, age 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, December 2, 2025, at his home in Brown County.

Born in Colusa, California, on February 12, 1937, George enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school and was honorably discharged in 1958. He later retired from Amtrak in Beech Grove, where he worked as a millwright, and previously worked for The Indianapolis Star on the Linotype.

George faithfully attended the Pleasant Valley Separate Baptist Church in Gnaw Bone and formerly attended Great Hope and Midway Separate Baptist Churches. He enjoyed tending to his property, cutting firewood for the winter, and caring for his vegetable and flower gardens. He also found joy in watching Gunsmoke, Hogan's Heroes, and Columbo, and was an enthusiastic fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the Kansas City Chiefs.

George is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Martha J. (Tuck) Lewis, whom he married on July 6, 1958, in West Virginia. He is also survived by his children: Mark Lewis of Martinsville; Michael Lewis of Brown County; Todd (Kathy) Lewis of Paragon; Laura Arnold of Brown County; and Ted (Shawnda) Lewis of Martinsville; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Louis Allen Arnold; his great-granddaughter, Hazel Wren Lewis; and several siblings.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, December 9, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Pastor Mike Brown will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown, with military rites presented by the Brown County Honor Guard.
