George Philip Longmeyer
Oct. 30, 1940 - Oct. 9, 2024
George Philip Longmeyer was born in Whitehall, IL on October 30, 1940, to Lucy (Wood) and Joseph Longmeyer. Growing up on the family farm in Greenfield, IL, George learned about getting up early and putting in a long day. He played football and ran track at Greenfield High School, where you could find his older brothers and cousins playing alongside him. After graduating from Greenfield High School, George and a friend drove to St. Louis, MO and enlisted in the Marine Corps. Completing basic training in San Diego, George served for four years (1959-1963). After serving, he attended Western Illinois University, graduating with a degree in Political Science.
In 1971, George and his young family moved to Hoffman Estates, IL to take on the position of Assistant Village Manager. In 1972, George was named the Village Manager of Hoffman Estates. In 1979, George went into the private sector working for Arlingdale Home Builders. In 1981, he went back to public service as Assistant Village Manager of Schaumburg, IL. He served in that role until 1986, when he became Village Manager. Under his leadership both Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg grew exponentially. The population of both communities grew substantially and more businesses began to call the suburbs home. As Village Manager he oversaw the redevelopment of Schaumburg's Town Square, including the building of a new library, the purchase of Schaumburg Airport, and the approval to build the baseball stadium known as Wintrust Field.
George retired in 1998, but his public service was not over. He was elected to the Schaumburg Park District in 2001 where he served until retired from government in 2021. During his time on the Park District Board he helped bring a number of projects to fruition including a new Sports Center, the Kay Wojcik Conservation Area, Atcher Island Water Park, Bison's Bluff Nature Playground, and the renovation of the Schaumburg Golf Club. An avid golfer, you could usually find George spending most weekends at the golf course. Upon his retirement from public service in 2021, a lake at the Schaumburg Golf Club was named after him - Lake Longmeyer is home to many sleeves of golf balls, a few too many put there by George while playing every weekend with his standing foursome.
George graduated from from Western Illinois University with a B.A. in Politics and from Lewis University with a Masters in Public Administration.
George is survived by his children, Jennifer Longmeyer-Wood (Christian Wood) of McLean, VA, Brian (Lauren) of Hoffman Estates, IL, and Jeffrey of Lake in the Hills, IL. Grandchildren, Grace, Jason, Ella, Audrey, Calvin, and Lily. And numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
George was preceded in death by his older brothers, Joseph and John, twin sister, Margaret, and younger sister, Mary Lee.
A funeral will be held on Monday, October 21, at 10:30am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Folds of Honor or the Illinois Park and Recreation Foundation.
