George Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 23, 2025.
George Atherton Martin, a beloved figure with a life story that touched many hearts, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025. George was known for his warmth, love of people, and an unwavering zest for life.

George's extraordinary journey began in December 1937, when he was found as an abandoned baby in downtown Memphis. His photograph graced the front page of the Commercial Appeal with the headline, "Bring Me Home for Christmas". In response, Thelma Martin did just that and provided him with a loving and permanent home.
George celebrated his first birthday on January 4, 1938, with his new family. Throughout his life, George cherished his special birthday. His friendly nature meant he never met a stranger, and he made it a practice to ask new acquaintances for their own birthdates, taking pride in remembering most.

George found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a believer in the "Jesus Christ My Lord and Savior" and would always be the first to lead a group in prayer. George's passions included his family, Elvis, bowling, watching old movies, and admiring holiday lights. He had a particular fondness for big meals, a warm cup of coffee, all animals, and playing the harmonica. George also had a charming way of saying hello to all the ladies he met with "Hey Doll," a gesture that brought smiles to many.

For many years, George was a dedicated participant in the SERVS Program, where he met his best friend and inseparable companion of 18 years, Evelyn Moore. George was a very hard worker during his years in SERVS, holding many jobs until his retirement. He was praised by multiple supervisors over the years for his work ethic and dependability. George will be deeply missed by his most recent devoted caretaker, Barbara, who adored him and for whom his family is so grateful.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Martin. George leaves behind a legacy of kindness and connection and is survived by his loving cousins and their families:
• Mrs. Max Satterfield and her children, Court and Kerry Satterfield, and family Court 2, Kennedy, Christian, and Honor; Marci and Donald Nobert and their children, Webster, O'Malley, Isabel, and Boone.
• Mrs. Robert Satterfield of Cairo, Illinois.
• Mrs. Billy Dickson and her family, Chuck Dickson, Sigried Dickson, and her daughter Capri Nicole.

A generous and loving spirit, George will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of love and perseverance, and his memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of the many he touched.

My sincere condolences. George was one of my fondest memories at SRVS. I met George and his cousin Max on a Friday afternoon in the early 80's. Max explained that George just needed his own place and a little bit of help. George was energetic, helpful kind, and a hard worker. I said OK, we will take good care of him.
He loved to walk and pick up "his treasures". He would tell me another man's junk is another man's treasure. Over the years he learned not to pick up so many things. He then focused on
seeing that the lawns where he worked and lived were well maintained. While SRVS did fulfill the promise to support George. He was the treasure that supported SRVS and helped the company to achieve excellence.
I know SRVS for 35 years did a great job supporting George's independence. He is gone but never forgotten. He will truly be missed.
