George W. Mathis
November 14, 1929 - September 24, 2025
George W. Mathis passed from this Earth on September 24, 2025 at the age of 95 years, 10 months and 10 days. An age he was always proud to share. George passed at the Atlantic City Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born on November 14, 1929 in New Gretna, N.J., to Leon Mathis and Verda Mott. Raised from a young age by Aunt Dee and Uncle Art Conrad, alongside their daughter Mae. He felt them to be his family along with his brothers and sisters from his biological parents. In his later years made it a point to call them all on a weekly basis. He met the love of his life in high school, and in Mary Jones found the woman he would spend his life with. After High School, he elected to join the United States Air Force, and served God and Country for over 20 years. He proudly served during the Berlin Air Lift, through the Korean War and in country during the Vietnam war. Acting through most of that career as a B25 crew chief, he was always proud when the Generals would choose his plane for travel. George earned a Presidential Citation for his repair of one of the four radar installations that protected the Eastern Seaboard and went down during a hurricane, sacrificing his safety. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he moved his family to Egg Harbor City. There he and Mary raised their children - Bob (Joanne), Donna (Paul), Mary (Gary), and George (Charrise). He continued working as a civilian contractor for the Federal Government for an additional 18 years. In his free time he could be found working on his beloved cars and flower gardens. Upon his second retirement he and Mary moved to their FarmVille VA retreat. Recently they returned to N.J., to be closer to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sadly George lost his beloved Mary in April of 2024. He decided that he wanted to spend his remaining retirement with each of his children to share his life experiences. In the days prior to his passing he celebrated what would have been the 73rd wedding anniversary with Mary, and shared he was not worried to pass as he would finally be able to hold Mary again. Final services and remembrance of George will be held on his 96th birthday, November 14, 2025. Service to be held at Wimberg Funeral Home, 400 Liverpool Avenue, Egg Harbor City, NJ 08215, a gathering beginning at 10 am, a remembrance held at 11 am, and a burial service with military honors held at the Egg Harbor City Cemetery at 12 pm. A repast will be held after the burial at the Atlantic County 4H Center, 3210 State Hwy 50, Mays Landing, NJ 08330. If you cannot make the service, George would be happy if you saluted him with a meal from a Wendy's restaurant, plain burger and Jr. chocolate frosty, his favorite. In lieu of flowers, he family requests donations be made to military foundations that specialize in supporting or veterans. For directions and condolences, please visit
