Dolores and Family,

My thoughts and prayers to you all! I always enjoyed my time docking with you and thought only the best of George for his special way of making one feel welcome.

Living so far away means late news and I'm sorry I could not be there with you.

Deepest prayers and thoughts....

Dolores, In the early 70's, when I first became a boater, our boat, BEAUTIFUL NOISE, was docked @ Valley Harbor. George was always there to lend a hand, give advice and give support. Everyone always had positive things to say about him. In later years, when I met you, I was STILL hearing great things about George. What a wonderful legacy. For you and the family, please accept my deepest sympathy, and know that I will keep you in my prayers. Hugs, Paulette

What a great friend George was to the City of Vermilion and especially to me. His dedication to the safety and well being of everyone was unmatched. I will never forget the countless times George risked his life breaking ice in an effort to save a life or avoid property damage togskwd someone else. Beyond the public life, George was a kind, dedicated friend and much of what was accomplished for Vermilion while he was serving as Service Director was due to him. I shall always be grateful for his friendship and support. Sail on my friend! (Former Mayor) Hobie Johnson

I have so many fond stories that my brother and I could write a book about working at VHM growing up and what we learned and did with the Phillips family. George was at the heart of it all. I think my college boyfriend and I spent the first few years in College just quoting George sayings from our summer jobs there and we would crack up. They trusted us to do a lot there! My brother learned the equipment and ice breaker. George even let me borrow a dock boy and one of his "Valley Harbor" engraved el Caminoes to move into my first college apartment in Columbus ..and we all know how George loved his el Caminoes! What boss does that? He even let us run and hang out in the old security shack. For anyone that worked there, you know it was a nightly tradition to eagerly await for George to look out at the river and give the nightly word, "ok let's lock the doors". He gave me a ride home one evening and I asked him (being young & naive); "Mr. Phillips how can you work 7 days a week? Don't you ever just want a day off?" He said something similar to "Well, Jennifer I truely enjoy it. I really do." For some reason, the way he said it and the way he meant it stuck with me forever! To the Phillips boys & family, I will never forget VHM or your dad. His stories will live on in my family forever. My deepest condolences,

Our deepest sorrow to the Phillips family for your loss. George was our gruff but lovable King of Valley Harbor for the 20 years we docked there and we both loved him. Denny will miss stopping by to share stories with him, and he will be remembered fondly.

Dear Dolores, David, Danny and Darren,

I have such great memories of working for Mr. Phillips...I still recall all the fun times we had together. I can still picture Mr. Phillips dancing to "Old time Rock and Roll" after he showed me how to get rid of poison ivy on my skin with Comet Cleanser. Mr. Phillips was truly one of the most generous good hearted gentlemen I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Rest in peace.

Dear Dolores, David, Dan, and Darren, & family. If you want to talk Heart. George was the Heart of Vermilion. If it wasn't for all his efforts over the years, one would wonder where the town would be today. What a great family of boaters & friends he created at Valley Harbor. He is truly loved by all. You had a problem he was there to help and guide, always. We are sure George is at the helm of one of his "GO FAST BOATS" in the big Blue Sky. You Know on board is Sugar, Stroker, Marty, and Scott, and all their guardian angels.

Deepest Sympathy, so glad our paths crossed.

As a child I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Mr Phillips and the boys at the marina. We lived across the river, and I had the opportunity to hang out at the marina, do occasional jobs like bottom painting of boats, get in trouble by walking on the railroad tracks, and biking in the Baja. I also learned a lot of technical skills at a young age like how to repair outboard motors. I have fond memories from my time with Mr Phillips. One of my early memories was one summer I had terrible poison ivy on my legs and George (I always called him Mr Phillips) explained the benefits of using diesel fuel and gasoline to cure poison ivy. I hate to admit it, but some of is approaches did work. He will be greatly missed. Rich Bulan

Our sadness is overwhelming, but is buffered by so many unbelievable memories of George and his family. Trips to Chicago Boat Shows, Disneyworld, a cruise, Canada,Florida condo, and on and on. Crazy weekends at Valley Harbor for so many years. George was a true "one of a kind." We are so sorry we are unable to attend the service. Please know we are there in spirit and in love.

June 13, 2017

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Dolores, Danny, David and the Phillips family. The many memorable stories from Valley Harbor, will keep George in hearts forever. I am smiling, thinking of a couple of them while writing this condolence.

Of the many words, phrases, I heard George say, as we made one last run toward a ice jam, he said, "only by the grace of God go I". We hit the last of the jam and all the ice started flowing out. No man worked harder, or longer than George Phillips! Rest in peace my boss, my friend! There was no one like him, there never will be!
