George Selig Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Cremation Society of Iowa - Des Moines on Mar. 13, 2026.
George Walter Selig was born on August 15th, 1951, in South Bend, Indiana, and passed on battling with lung cancer on April 24th, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa at Mercy One surrounded by loved ones.

George had been a father, grandpa, husband, brother, and friend, and always to the best of his ability, always. He got his associates degree in electronics at age 38. He loved spending time at the beach, listening to and playing music, and spending time with the people he loved. He loved to drum and had his own set, along with a few guitars. He also loved eating good food, especially some really good BBQ and chocolate of any kind (M&M's and chocolate shakes were some of his favorites). He knew the importance of spending time together and always made the best of it. He loved to visit the tropical coasts but lived mostly in the Midwest, like Indiana and Iowa.

He worked at UPS for almost 2 decades, at a massive cold storage warehouse, and even at Montgomery Ward as a salesman, where he thrived. He excelled in anything sales related. He was great with his hands, and even added-on a dining room, mud room, and wrap-around porch to the family's home in his prime.

He is survived by three siblings: Wayne, Karen, and Linda, children: Cory, Rachel, and Laura (who was his favorite). He will be missed by six grandchildren: Zeph, Tatum, Reese, Crystal, Claireese, and Trey. He also leaves behind an uncle Leslie Selig, an aunt Shirlie Jones, cousins Lois Suckow, Mark Merrit, and Brenda Estal, among others, and was even loved by a few good friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Virginia and Harold Selig, and his brother, Harold Selig Jr, and brother-in-law, Mike Mervilde.

There will be a small Celebration of Life at a future date. Please reach out to {Laura 563-419-9114 or Cory 920-391-8073} for information if you would like to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Laura Selig, 4409 Toronto St. Apt 2. Ames, IA 50014. You can also send your favorite chocolate, snack, or an M&M dispenser. He would've wanted it that way.
