George Green Shackelford

I personally knew Dr. Shackleford and his wife Grace. I rented a room in their home for some time before finding a permanent residence. Dr. Shackleford was truly one of a kind and will never be replaced. I'd never heard one of his lectures as I was not a student but I could have listened to him for hours speak about anything for he was a learned man. George, I'll always miss you and one day I hope to see you again. Ed Finn

I was priviledged to have Dr. Shackelford as a professor and to work for him as a teaching assistant in '76-'77. He made history come to life for me and many others. Rest in Peace.

George Shackelford was the prime mover behind the restoration and preservation of Smithfield Plantation in Blacksburg. We at Preservation Virginia are grateful for his knowledge, his passion and his devotion to history. He will be greatly missed.

Professor Shackelford taught me the meaning of history especially the period 1750 to 1850, and how to become a student of history. Also, I was fortunate enough to live at The Smithfield and experience Dr. Shackelford in a lifelong learning experience for which I am forever gratefule. Rest in Peace my friend.

Professor Shackelford was one of my favorite professors at Virginia Tech. He loved history and the University of Virginia with his heart, and believed that we must learn history well in order to understand today's events. I did not know him well outside the classroom, but I know he cared for his students and their wellbeing as few professors do.

GGS was the oldest of the "Old Boys," members of Virginia Alpha chapter of Phi Kappa Psi who were active 1950-1960 and returned to the University for thirty consecutive autumns for a reunion weekend. George, prior to his illness, was a frequent and much loved participant in these annual gatherings. The plaque dedicated in 2009 and now displayed in the Virginia Alpha house at 159 Madison Lane lists all of the "Old Boys" according to when they were initiated - George Green occupies the first spot, while active 1953-55 when completing his doctoral studies, he had been initiated in 1940!

George's wonderful sense of humor is what all his friends at 159 Madison Lane will best remember.

I look up on the wall in my den and note his signature is one of many on the paddle I earned in 1953 when initiated into Virginia Alpha. Dear friend, George, rest in peace.
