George Thomas Smith Jr., age 89, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2025. He was born on September 15, 1935, in Williamsburg, Kentucky, to George Thomas Smith, Sr. and Meldia Florence Lee.
George was preceded in death by his loving parents and sister, Pamela A. Smith. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Carlene Smith (nee Coffey); his son, George Thomas (Vida) Smith III, daughter, Cherie (Rob) Douglas; grandchildren, Tiffany C. Smith and Christina Douglas; his brother, John E. (Janice) Smith; along with many other family members and friends who cherished him.
A US Army veteran and a dedicated Cincinnati Police Officer who served on the K-9 unit during his career and was affectionately recognized as a gentle giant by those who knew him. After retiring from the Police Force, he continued his career as a security officer for the Cincinnati Public Schools. Known for his love of fishing and working on cars, particularly hot rods, he had a passion for woodwork and enjoyed watching the Reds and the Bengals. George was also fond of police shows, especially “Walker, Texas Ranger.” He loved to travel and camp with his family. His excursions took him to every state except Hawaii, but his favorite place was always with his family. George was known for his wonderful sense of humor and would often express his love for his family with a heartfelt response, "love you" or "love you most."
As a long-time member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church since November of 1953, George served as a Deacon. He had a rich involvement in the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Scottish Rite and Shriners for over 50 years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for Operation Christmas Child.
Visitation will be at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 8645 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242, on Monday August 11, 2025, from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM. Fraternal order of police service at 10:45am. The celebration of life will begin at 11 AM. Burial will take place at 1:00 pm, located at Spring Grove Cemetery,4521 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincnnati Ohio 45232.
