George Twitchell Obituary

Published by Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home on Oct. 9, 2016.
George Gorgas Twitchell of Bloomfield, CT passed away October 9, 2016. George was pre-deceased by his wife Anne Barton Twitchell, his brother Henry D. Twitchell, Jr., and his sister Nancy T. Anthony. He is survived by his sister Claire T. Grant of Mechanicsburg, PA, sister-in-law Jean B. Twitchell of Falmouth, ME, daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) T. Alexander and husband David of Columbia, MD, son Steven B. Twitchell and wife Bobbi of Bethel, CT, son James P. Twitchell and wife Ellen of Chelmsford, MA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren-Colin and Jeremy Alexander; Garrett, Adam, and Audrey Twitchell; Jennifer, Kate, and Kevin Twitchell; and extended family members Ellen S. Twitchell of Milford, CT and Gail Pond of Avon, CT. George was born in Hartford, CT on February 3, 1925. He grew up in West Hartford and graduated from Hall High School in 1943 after which he joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country in the North Atlantic and South Pacific theatres. Upon his return he settled in the Boston area. In 1948 he married Anne D. Barton, and in 1950, he completed his degree in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. After moving back to the Hartford area, he pursued a career in homebuilding and land development during which he designed and oversaw the construction of custom homes in the West Hartford area. In 1968, the Twitchells purchased an historic farmhouse and acreage in Barnard, VT. Years of DIY home and land improvements followed, and despite its eventual sale, George's spirit remained with his cherished Vermont meadows, ponds, and maple groves. George was also a talented versifier, pianist, and calligrapher. He left behind a rich body of work. He also was passionate about bicycling. George and Anne were a frequent sight around town on their French tandem bicycle. Group tours took them through challenging terrain in California, France, and New England. When a knee injury limited George's bicycling, the couple turned to walking tours of the British Isles and France. In 2008 the Twitchells moved to the Seabury Retirement Community in Bloomfield where George became an ardent iPad afficionado and a champion "Words with Friends" competitor. Visits with his beloved wife Anne were the highlight of his days. The Twitchell family is profoundly grateful for the tender loving care that Anne and George received at Seabury. Contributions in George's memory can be made to Seabury, Americare, or the National Spasmodic Torticollis Association (NSTA).

I am grateful to have received a reminder in my e-mail box of George's passing three years ago. I am always glad to share with family how much he touched my life. I talked with my mother, Myrtle Cole, a few days ago, and we happened to mention Quechee, the foliage, and how beautiful it was driving the North Road in Barnard before it was paved. Ah...all those 'before' years. My dad, Bruce, 88, died March 11th in the nursing home with Mom and my sister, Bonnie, at his side. Another chapter of life ends, but good memories remain and allow for future chapters. My warmest wishes to everyone. Debby

I was touched to receive a notice that reminded me of George and Ann. What pleasant memories I carry in my heart to this very day. It's wonderful to have memories that bring nothing but smiles...and a separate peace...as I recall my love for both of them. I will treasure the letters and poems George sent to me. My dad, Bruce Cole, will be 88 this month, and is now in a nursing home, and my mother, Myrtle, moved into a small one-bedroom apartment. I was in NY in September, and Mom and I talked about Vermont days and how much I loved my friendship with George. Thank you for letting me remember George and Ann and write a little note. I will be smiling all day! Debby Cole Elliott

Today is March 19, 2017. I was talking with my mother this morning, and I mentioned that I had not heard from George at Christmastime, which was a first for me. I wrote an e-mail shortly thereafter, but again, I did not hear back. I told her that I was going to go online and see if he was still alive. I am very saddened to learn that George died back in October. He was a dear friend of mine from the Vermont days when he and Anne bought the farm on the North Road from my parents, Bruce and Myrtle Cole, and I was only 16 and wanted to live in on that farm forever. George always wrote and sent me a couple of his poems, one of which is a 'Cloud Poem' in lovely calligraphy. Thank you to everyone is George's family for writing such a wonderfully heartfelt obituary. I will let Mom,84, and Dad, 86 and in poor health, know about George and Anne. Sincerely, Debby Cole Elliott, 609 San Leanna Drive, Austin, TX 78746-3876

I am at a loss for words to describe my beloved neighbors and friends, Anne and George. The more I ponder the impact they had on my childhood, the more overwhelmed with gratefulness I am. They were influential in my motivation for education, my introduction to a variety of sports and my exposure to many of the arts, especially music, dance and theater. Their home was my entertainment center and always a place where I felt welcomed and loved. Anne's smiles and laughter and George's humor and wit will definitely live on in their children.
Bets, Steve and Jim, you know that I share your grief.
Much love, Candy

We're sending love and condolences during this time of loss for the Twitchell's and their families. George and Anne were an important presence in our (the Haviland children's) growing up years, especially at Square Pond and Colebrook. We will miss you both dearly but are holding you as always in our hearts. Much love and celebration for the two very special and wonderful people that you were and you are. Hope and the Haviland family

To the family of Anne & "King George", (as I would call him). It is with such sadness that I am writing this note...my heartfelt sympathy goes out to each and every one of you. I've only known this beautiful couple for about one year; however I have grown to love and adore both of them. George was a dedicated husband to Anne and I would always enjoy his regular visits to my recreation room as he would sit and wait patiently for Anne to finish her lunch so that he could spend quality time with her. I was so fortunate to get to know both of them. Let me add that in June of this year George came to me and requested to go to Elizabeth Park with Anne. I told him that if I could, I would do everything in my power to make that happen. Well what a blessing that day was! We had wonderful weather, a nice lunch and they sat together by the pond holding hands....like couples in love do. The love they shared truly moved me...as did the shocking news of his recent passing. I would like to leave you with this...in my field people come and go...but Anne & George will live in my heart forever. I will miss seeing him, chatting with him and seeing the adoring look in his eyes as he sat and held hands with Anne. They are together now...a change of address of sorts. However, I already miss seeing "King George" but I know he's in a better place. I have the most utmost respect for both of them and your family. I will miss them both dearly. They may be gone from our lives but their legacy will live on. You are all in my thoughts and prayers in this time of sorrow.

Dear Betsy and family,

My deepest sympathy at the loss of both parents in such a short time. We are so lucky when our parents live long lives and leave us with many wonderful and loving memories.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Blessings,
