George Whitington went home to be with the Lord on November 4, 2024. He was born on October 15, 1937, in Dallas, Texas to Leroy and Irene (Whitcher) Whitington. He was raised in Dallas and attended the University of North Texas, where he received a BA in French and a MA in Spanish. He also completed PhD graduate work in Linguistics at UT Austin.
George married Cleo Morgan on May 23, 1959. He was in the Air Force from 1960 to 1964, serving as an ICBM operator. He was a life-long educator, mostly at community colleges and loved teaching ESL classes. Most importantly, as a lay minister, he and Cleo had a long life of Christian service in churches throughout Texas – Houston, Dallas, Austin, Odessa, and for the last 24 years, in San Antonio. They opened their home to many over the years, for meals, weekly Bible study, and hospitality; because of this, they also have numerous spiritual children.
George was known for his deep knowledge of the Bible and church history, shepherding of others, and faithfulness to the Lord in service. He also was very involved in supporting many churches in Mexico, Central America, and Brazil.
He is survived by his children, Grace Whitington Barber, Martha Gill (Jalee), Steve Whitington (Julie), son-in-law, Lynn Denton; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; his brothers, David and Frank; the bonus daughters for which they were guardians, Linda Roberts (Roger) and Peggy Sue Prewitt-Herber; and many more nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cleo, sister Leah Ruth, parents, grandparents, and a daughter, Virginia "Ginny" Denton.
The family also expresses their gratitude for the wonderful, kind and caring staff and caregivers at the Brookdale Whitby Assisted Living Center, which has been his home for several years. We are also very appreciative of the excellent and loving care that he received from nurses and caregivers at the VA CLC Hospice during his last days.
Family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North,3401 Cherry Ridge, San Antonio, TX 78230.
Friends, family and others whose lives have been touched by George are invited to celebrate his life on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 12:00pm at the funeral home chapel, followed by a committal service at Mission Retama Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Parkinson's Foundation, Church in San Antonio building fund, or the charity of your choice.
