George Jerome Woelfel, 96, of Platteville, WI, formerly from Rockford, IL, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, at Southwest Health Center. Born February 24, 1929, in Chicago, IL. The son of Frank and Victoria Woelfel. George married his true love, Mildred "Mickey" Woelfel, on November 16, 1957, in Chicago.
George embraced life to the fullest, and anyone who met him knew the extent of his heart. He volunteered countless hours at numerous places, including the Red Cross, NIRIS Broadcasting Station, and the Rockford Literature Center. George had many passions in life. He was a season ticket holder for many years for Notre Dame football, where he shared the experience with family and friends. He was also an avid Chicago sports fan for life. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and reading history books. He and his family took many family vacations that created lifelong memories. He was the definition of a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
George is survived by his two sons Michael (Mary) Woelfel, and Patrick (Eva Lynn) Woelfel; his four grandchildren: Amanda Wonders, Candice Woelfel, Caitlin (Björn) Bergstrom, and Garrett Woelfel; and six great-grandchildren: Lexi Wonders, Taylor Wonders, Rörik Woelfel, Freyja Bergstrom, Thorvaldr Bergstrom, and Willow Woelfel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickey Woelfel; grandson, Christian Woelfel. Dear friends: Monsignor Charles McNamee, Loretta McNamee, Sister Rose McNamee, and Harry Donals.
