Georgia Sanchez Obituary

Published by Forest Lawn - Covina Hills on Oct. 23, 2012.
Georgia Mae Sanchez, born on July 20, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas, passed away October 23, 2012. She resided in Los Angeles, California at the time of her passing. She served in the military as a Navy nurse and was very proud to be an American. Georgia became a member of the Baha'i Faith in 1962, and was taught by Eulalia Bobo and Louise Burris. She served her faith with all her heart. From meager beginnings, as a Baha'i she became a world traveler, who lived and traveled in West Africa, Northern Africa, Eqypt, Bermuda, Europe, China and Israel, spreading the message of Baha'u'llah everywhere she went. As a Baha'i pioneer to Bermuda she was instrumental in the establishment of the first National Spiritual Assembly there. Georgia was also the road manager for Seals and Crofts, a Baha'i muscians who used their music to spread the principles pf the Baha'i Faith. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Jeffrey Barnes Baha'i Choir, who sang all over the United States, which developed into Georgia's participation in International Choirs, directed by Van Gilmer, Tom Price, and Eric Dozier. She was a staunch champion of the Los Angeles Baha'i Center, Sunday Devotional Program, and the Annual Gospel Choir Workshop directed by Van Gilmer, which she facilitated for 10+ years. She is dearly loved and was an inspiration to many; she never met a stranger that didn't become her friend. She is survived by her daughter Eleanor Marie, two grandchildren, Olinga and Brandon, and four great grandchildren, Emon Kamal, Aaliyah, Faith and Isaiah; five brothers, Calvin, Charles, James, Ernest and Lawrence (deceased); two sisters, Alverna Jean, and Maggie. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Covina, California.

This is for Georgia and Eleanor. Eleanor, you may not remember me, but your mom and I shared an apartment in Monrovia, Liberia in 1971. I was a 20 year-old redheaded Baha'i, if that helps place me. I have only now become aware of Georgia's passing, and I simply want to say what a strong, elegant, funny, interesting woman she was. My memories of you are that you were very beautiful (I think you were about 14 at that time) and that your mom was extremely proud of you. I wish you all the very best, and I hold your mom in my prayers.
