J. Henry Stuhr West Ashley ChapelGerald David Adams, 74, passed away on October 7, 2025, at his home in Charleston, SC. Jerry was a native of Lakeland, Florida, who grew up in Greenville, SC, and lived most of his adult life in Columbia and Charleston.
A recipient of the Gonzalez Award for excellence in journalism, Jerry spent years as politics reporter for SC news outlets such as The Charleston News & Courier, The Charleston Post & Courier, the Snitch, and The State. His career also included chapters as a TV commentator for WIS in Columbia, a political consultant, and a campaign manager. He was also the communications director for government agencies.
Jerry was a graduate of Christ School, Furman University (Communications), and University of South Carolina (Journalism).
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church who had a deep spiritual connection to Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, SC.
He was an avid student of martial arts including Tai Chi, Karate, and Kung Fu. He was also a dedicated hiker who had traversed the Appalachian Trail, the Foothills Trail, the North Cascades Trail, and many other hiking trails
throughout his life, often with close friends. This past June, he hiked the AT in New Jersey, where he had worked as a Ridge Runner for 5 summers.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father Cecil, his mother Jean, and his brother Johnny.
He is survived by his wife Martha, his son Noah (Candace), and his stepchildren Eric and Rachel Nye. He also leaves behind many beloved friends.
An inurnment service will be held at Mepkin Abbey on December 12th at 3:00 pm. A celebration-of-life service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian on December 13th at 1:00 pm, with a reception to follow.
Remembrances may be made to Mepkin Abbey.
