Gerald Chambers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 10, 2026.
Gerald (Jerry) Chambers, 82, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026 at home. Jerry was born in Sayre, PA, on May 13, 1943. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Martha Chambers, sisters Dolores Cuddihe and Joan Rita Chambers, and brothers Paul Chambers, Raymond Chambers, and Larry Chambers. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Frances (Levitt) Chambers, his children Lisa (Jon) Sterlace and Mark (Carrie) Chambers, and his grandchildren Kelli (James) Pate, Kaitlyn Sterlace, Kerigan Sterlace (Evan Gertzen), Ryker Chambers, Sloane Chambers and great-grandsons Aidan Merchant and Brayden Langston and great-granddaughter Kalliope Gertzen and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his brother Gordon (Sandi) Chambers.
Before moving to Corning, Jerry lived for 44 years in Sunrise Terrace, Town of Dickinson, where he and Fran raised their children. He served as the Co-Vice-President for Maintenance of the Sunrise Terrace Community Association and was honored to lead a team which built a children's park at the Community Center. He also served as Assistant Troup Leader of Boy Scout Troop #3 for many years. He retired in 2007 from the Children's Home of the Wyoming Conference in Hillcrest after 25 years, having previously worked at L. J. Kingsley Co. and Gardner Motors.
His passion was building and fixing things. He could skillfully fix most anything, and his joy was building something "from scratch". He and Fran bought their two-bedroom home in Sunrise Terrace, and he totally remodeled their starter home and added two bedrooms, a bathroom, a family room and three closets by himself. He was frequently called upon to fix things for his children and friends. Nothing was impossible for his friends and family.
Jerry loved being a seasonal camper at Sunset Park near Baldwinsville, NY for 36 years and boating on the Erie Canal. The friends which he made at Sunset Park enriched his life and remained friends long after he stopped being able to camp. He enjoyed traveling, cruising and spending the winter months in Orange Beach, Alabama.
He was generally a quiet man and didn't converse a lot, but his family always said that if he said something, you had better listen because it was important! If asked how he would like to be remembered, it was that he was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a good friend, and a good man.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 13, 2026 from 1 pm to 3 pm at Thomas J Shea Funeral Home, 137 Robinson St in Binghamton, NY with a prayer service at 3pm. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Johnson City at a later date. A Celebration of Jerry's Life will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
