Cumberland, MD- Gerald "Jerry" Wayne Duckworth, 81, of Cumberland, MD passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Devlin Manor Health Care Center.
Born March 22, 1942 in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Duckworth was the son of the late Raymond Henry Duckworth and Beulah May (Jewell) Duckworth. He was also preceded in death by his first wife: Martha Etta Duckworth; several siblings; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Jerry attended Allegany High School and was a United States Marine Corps Veteran serving from 1960-1964. He retired from Schmidt Bakery and then worked for LabCorp for several years. He also volunteered at the Veterans' Administration as a driver transporting fellow veterans anywhere they needed to go.
Jerry was a life member of the American Legion Post #13 and a member of the Henry Hart Post # 1411V.F.W., the Cumberland Outdoor Club, and also the Mountainside Marine Corps League. He was a faithful volunteer of the food pantry at Souls Harbor Church.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 18 years: Rita Duckworth; his sons: John VanMeter, Jr and wife Cristal; Jason VanMeter and wife Toni; and Jeremy VanMeter and wife Dawn; numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD (www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Betty Kennedy officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Ryan VanMeter, Nathan VanMeter, Jacob VanMeter, Zander VanMeter, Jordan Pennington, and Samuel Leisch.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in his name to the American Legion Post #13, P.O. Box 1740, Cumberland, MD 21503-1740.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Home Hospice, Brittany, Kristie, and also the staff at Devlin Manor including his nurse, Tiffany and Destiny for all the care and compassion given.
