Gerald Hunting Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 27, 2025.
Jerry was born in Santa Maria, California and graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1948. He loved sports of all kinds, played high school football, basketball, track and played clarinet in the band. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer, and loved to watch college and professional sports. Shortly after graduating high school Jerry joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. He told amazing stories about his time on Navy ships across the world.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Helen, daughter Karen (Tom), son Russ, and two grandchildren Sarah and Travis.

Jerry was a commercial construction carpenter, foreman and a longtime member of the carpenters union. All throughout his life, Jerry was a builder and could find a way to fix just about anything. He built a boat, furniture, and even a full addition to their home, doing most of the work himself.

Fishing and golf were passions of his. He loved the ocean, fishing from the beach, pier, or his boat. He also loved to dive for abalone, dig for clams and hoop for crabs. He had spent time as a young man fishing and camping at lakes and streams all over northern and central California with his dad, however Hat Creek and Eagle Lake were a special place for him. He brought his kids, and eventually grandkids, there for decades of summer camping and fun with family friends.

After retirement Jerry played a lot of golf, traveling for tournaments as well as taking many cruises and trips. At 92 he was still on the course. He was a hard worker and a family man. We will miss him dearly.
