Gerald Moynahan Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 3, 2024.
Gerald T. Moynahan (Jerry) passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Born in Portsmouth NH on October 5, 1939, to Cornelius G. and Stella M. Moynahan. A lifelong resident of Eliot, he attended St. Patrick Academy in Portsmouth and finished school graduating from Eliot High School in 1957. After high school, he joined the United States Navy where he was stationed in the South Pacific before returning to Eliot. Once back in Eliot, a chance stop to grab a cup of coffee and an off the cuff remark was made to the cute girl behind the counter earning him a towel thrown at him but more importantly gaining the love of his life and soul mate Ruthie. Together they made their home and raised their family in Eliot.
Jerry worked for a time at Gendron Lumber, Ray Grover & Son construction and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He also was quite involved in many aspects of being a good son of Eliot from working part time with the public works department plowing snow, coaching little league baseball and sitting on several town boards but it was with the Eliot Fire Department that he found his other family. Jerry was a volunteer firefighter for 62 years attaining the rank of Assistant Chief, a position he held for 36 years right to the time of his passing.
A true New Englander, Jerry enjoyed watching sports and delighted in complaining about the woes the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics were suffering. An avid golfer, he was a member of the York Golf and Tennis club for over 45 years, playing a couple of times a week.
Jerry was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Ruth I. Grover Moynahan, His parents and sisters Hannah, Kathleen, Lillian.
Jerry is survived by his 4 children Dan and Barbara Moynahan, Suzanne and Kevin LeVan, Michael Moynahan and Maureen and David Moore. Grandchildren Stacy Moynahan Paradiso and her husband Tony, Sean, Spencer and Kiley Moynahan, Alexa and Mitch Moore and Jake and Caleb LeVan, Great grandchildren Henry, Eliza and Ashton Paradiso, brother Cornelius (Bud) Moynahan and sister Karen Moynahan Parrot.
A wake will be held at the Eliot Fire station, 1323 State Road, Eliot on Sunday September 8th from 1:00 to 3:00 with a procession and grave side services to follow. A celebration of Jerry's remarkable life will be held on his birthday Saturday October 5th time to be announced at the Regatta Room in Eliot
The family would like to thank Chief Jay Muzeroll and the entire Eliot Fire Department, Jeff Pelkey, Beacon Hospice and all of Dad's caretakers, Amata, Peter, Tammy, Chris and Kelly for their love and support.
The family welcomes donations in Jerry's name to the Eliot Firefighters Association in lieu of flowers.
