Gerald W. Schmer Sr.

Gerald W. Schmer, Sr., age 82, of Abbottstown, suddenly passed away in the care of Mercy House, Chambersburg, PA. Born in Cowiche, WA. Gerald was one of five children born to the late George Phillip Schmer and the late Pearl Sommerville Schmer.
Gerald was a family man, he enjoyed restoring classic cars and dedicated himself to serving his country in the United States Coast Guard. He served his country proudly in the Philippines, Viet Nam, and several duty stations throughout the United States. He served in the USCG for 32 years attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, of which for a time, he was the highest-ranking noncommissioned officer. He also served in the United States Navy.
Gerald was predeceased by his parents, his wife Mary Schmer, and his brother, Dale Schmer.
Left to cherish his memory are his children; Lisa Scott and her husband Bill, Gerald Schmer, Jr. and his wife Belinda, Lisa Bollinger and her husband Brian, Amanda Schmer, Tylor Schmer and Gerald Tiso, siblings; Sharon Atchley, Joan Gieseke, and Bernadine Schmer, also survived by 4 grandchildren; Jacob Smith, Derek Smith, SheaLee Freeland-Schmer, and Sloan Freeland-Smith, and 2 great grandchildren: Mary Jane Smith and Zen Smith.
Funeral Services and burial will be private. Gerald will be laid to rest in Washington State Veterans Cemetery, Medical Lake, WA.
A Memorial Service in celebration of Gerald's life will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 5:00PM at the East Berlin VFW Post #8896, 107 Locust St., East Berlin, PA 17316.
