James Gerald Smith, 83, passed away on March 1, 2025, at The Landings in Douglas, GA, after an extended illness.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, from 12:30 pm til 1:30 pm at Roundtree Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 2 pm at Shiloh Cemetery with Rev. Paul Fulton officiating.

Gerald was born on September 7, 1941, in Homerville, Georgia, to Frank and Mary Margaret Smith. He was the seventh of their children and is preceded in death by his sisters Alice Denton of Brunswick, GA; Eleanor Studebaker of Homerville, GA; Imogene Futch of Homerville, GA; and Winifred Godbolt of Waycross, GA. He is survived by his two brothers, William “Red” Smith of Homerville, GA, and Nathaniel Smith and his wife Jeanette of Lake Panasoffkee, FL.

After graduating from Clinch County High School, Gerald proudly served in the U.S. Army. He later married Lorine Smith of Ebro, FL, who preceded him in death. Together, they had two children: a daughter, Deborah, and her husband Mike Hayes of Homerville, GA, and a son, Greg Smith, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Lori Smith of Homerville, GA.

Gerald was a devoted grandfather to four grandchildren: Jennifer and Trey Murray of Homerville, GA; Mary and Alex Slusher of Homerville, GA; Marisa Hayes of Homerville, GA; and James “Zeke” Smith of Statesboro, GA. He also leaves behind one great-grandchild, William “Bruce” Murray of Homerville, GA, with another, Rylee Slusher, expected in March. Additionally, he is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A dedicated father and grandfather, Gerald was deeply cherished by his family and friends. He proudly served for 20 years in the military before retiring and went on to work as a lineman and foreman to provide for his family. After his years of building power lines, he became the county inspector, where he was well-respected and loved by all who knew him.

Gerald found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was fishing at Lake Vern or scratching lottery tickets. His sense of humor, generosity, and countless stories will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

His legacy of love and dedication to his family will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
