Services for Geraldine took place in
Pearl River, NY.
A gathering of friends and family will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 14, 2025 at Schott Funeral Home-Forest City Chapel, 505 N. Clark St, Forest City, IA 50436.
Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, IA.
Geraldine Fisher Goumas was born on November 13, 1923 in Thompson, Iowa. Jerry was one of 13 children, and was the last living child of Emma (nee Schauf) and Forest Fisher.
Jerry grew up in Thompson, Iowa. She graduated from Thompson High School in 1941. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received a bachelor of science in education from Drake University in 1952. Jerry continued her studies, earning a master's degree in guidance from New York University in 1962 and a master's degree in reading from Montclair University in 1970.
Jerry was a dedicated teacher for 42 years. She first taught in Iowa. Then she took her skills on the road, teaching in Japan and Germany before returning to the United States and teaching in Nanuet, NY. It was in Nanuet where she met and married fellow teacher, Jason Goumas in 1967. In total, Jerry taught 30 years in the Nanuet Public Schools and then became a member of the Nanuet Public Schools Retired Teachers. She was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
In addition to education, Jerry had a passion for music. She studied voice with Victor Powell and Eleanor Dietrich (a former Vienna Opera singer). Jerry sang in the choir at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in
Pearl River, NY. She also sang with the Rockland County Choral Society and the Morning Music Club. Jerry was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Jerry is predeceased in death by her parents, husband, six sisters, six brothers, and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends in both Rockland County, NY and Iowa.
