Gerri Kent was born in Iola, KS July 30, 1932 to James Clinton Nix and Esther (Grindle) Nix.
At the age of 2, her father passed away from tuberculosis which also took other family members. Gerri grew up in Fairland, OK after her mother married Dave Wilson. There she welcomed 2 younger brothers from their union: Woody and Sammy. Sadly, Sammy was killed at the age of 16 in a farming accident.
Gerri attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA where she met and married Murray Hubbard. From this union, 5 children were born: Kathy, Danny, Cindy, Karen and Monte and later, their hanai daughter, Bonnie McKewen. Gerri and Murray bought a farm outside of Woodbine, IA in 1959.There, they raised kids and horses and cattle and farmed the land.
In 1963, they started the Lazy H Dude Ranch in order to share the horses and open farm land with kids from cities. The 5 Hubbard kids worked as counselors and wranglers as well as competing in Little Britches Rodeos, Horse shows and High School Rodeos. Gerri was their fiercest support in all they did. Gerri cooked all the meals with help from local ladies. She would load up the station wagon for both breakfast and supper cookouts and meet the group on horseback to feed them all. From the counselors and the ranch kids…she was 'Mom'. She was the driving force and spirit of the Lazy H.
After the Lazy H closed, Gerri opened a generic mail order drug business called, Apothecary in that same Lazy H bunkhouse. She employed local ladies (a few Lazy H cooks!) for the call center. They called and shipped generics to pharmacies all over the country.
Gerri's next life chapter begins in Warrensburg, MO where she moved by herself. She bought a beautiful Dutch Colonial home outside of town and named it 'The Country Place' where she ran a B & B. It was here she met and married Jon Kent from Oregon. Gerri and Jon built a spiritual life with many friends and neighbors. Both were active in their church, the Knob Noster Restoration Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ, with Gerri playing the piano on many Sundays. Gerri and Jon delivered meals to shut ins and enjoyed visiting with those in need. Gerri baked a lot of pies and cookies for neighbors and friends and took a potluck meal to church almost every Sunday. Gerri had a large garden and canned a lot of food as well as jams and jellies from her fruit harvest. Grandchildren and great grandchildren looked forward to Grama's little jars of jams and jellies every Christmas.
Gerri's legacy is not material things but the wisdom and love of her family which was boundless. She was even caught at 2 a.m. giving advice to her teenage great granddaughters on boys and other life lessons! Gerri will be greatly missed as Mom, Grama, Great grama, aunt, sister, friend and neighbor, but we all carry a little of her with us every day through her words and deeds that she passed on to each of us.
In Mom's words from one of her many poems and writings:
"Remember always above all else that the best things in life are free.
That money can't bring a loved ones joy.
You alone hold the key.
And 'Heaven is not gained in a single bound'.
But we reach it day by day.
As we stumble and fall and get up again.
Asking Him to light the way."
