Harlingen, Texas - It is with great sorrow and profound respect that we announce the passing of Gilbert Anzaldua, a man of unwavering integrity, boundless kindness, and deep devotion, who left this world peacefully on December 1, 2024, at the age of 79. Gilbert was a dedicated family man, an esteemed and proud veteran, whose life and legacy have left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

Born in Mercedes, Texas, on September 13, 1945, to Antonio and Josefina Zuniga Anzaldua, Gilbert was a proud alum of Mercedes High School, where he excelled as a star athlete in both football and basketball.

In 1965, Gilbert answered the call to serve his country, bravely fighting in Vietnam after being drafted. Following his distinguished military career, Gilbert dedicated himself to the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, where he provided invaluable guidance and mentorship to countless students.

Gilbert served the American Legion Post 172 in various leadership roles, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his fellow veterans and the principles they fought to protect.

Gilbert shared a remarkable 52-year marriage with the love of his life, Lilia Anzaldua. Together, they built a family rooted in love and respect. He is survived by his devoted wife Lilia; his loving son Gilbert Roland (Andrea) Anzaldua of Harlingen; and his three cherished grandsons: Noah, Nathan, and Nevan Anzaldua.

He is also survived by his sister, Maria Elena Rosales of Mercedes. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Michelle Anzaldua, his brothers Antonio Jr., Eloy, Hilario, Juan Anzaldua, and his sister, Elma Saldivar.
