Gilbert T. Borrego entered eternal rest on September 3, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born on April 18, 1939 in
San Antonio, Texas to Salvador Farias and Isabel (Trevino) Borrego. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Rudy Borrego and Salvador Borrego, Jr. Gilbert leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of over 58 years, Elida (Salinas) Borrego; daughters, Linda Borrego-Jimenez (Rene) and Norma Borrego-Obregon (Michael); son, Gilbert D. Borrego; sister, Elida B. Casias (Rudy); brother, Deacon Joe T. Borrego; grandchildren, Clarissa Obregon, Julia Obregon, and Michael Obregon, Jr.; numerous other loving family members and friends. Gilbert attended Harlandale High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. Following his service, he worked at H & M Auto Parts for more than 20 years and later retired from SAWS in 2005 after 23 years of dedicated service. In his younger days, Gilbert enjoyed racing and proudly ran a team known as Borrego Bros. Racing. He also had a lifelong love for boxing, wrestling, and auto racing. Above all, Gilbert was deeply devoted to his Catholic faith. He studied the Bible with passion and participated in countless Bible studies, conferences, retreats, and seminars dedicated to Catholic Faith Formation. Over the years, he was active in numerous prayer groups at Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lawrence, and St. Bonaventure Catholic Churches. Gilbert furthered his studies at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio and was an Oblate Novice of St. Benedict at Corpus Christi Abbey, where he frequently visited with his family. He was a member of both the Cursillista and ACTS retreats and was always willing to share conversations about the Faith with anyone he met. At St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Gilbert served as a Confirmation teacher and later as Assistant Director of Religious Education for many years. After becoming a parishioner at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in 1998, he remained active there until his final days. He was a Eucharistic Minister for over 40 years, he proudly served as a Eucharistic Minister when Pope John Paul II came to San Antonio in 1987. Gilbert was a member of the RCIA program, and a Godfather to many family members and friends throughout his life. Gilbert will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to God, his boundless curiosity about the world, and his eagerness to understand how things worked. His faith, his love for family, and his generous spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 P.M. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mission Burial Park South where military honors will be rendered.
