Gilbert Montes Obituary
Published by Legacy on Sep. 23, 2025.
Gilbert J. Montes II, 73 years young was called home after a valiant battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his transition. Gilbert leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, and unwavering devotion.
Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to Gilbert Sr. and Aida Montes; Gilbert was the eldest sibling to Robert and Miriam. He earned his associate's degree in social work from Compton College. His journey took him through New York, California, Mississippi, Guam, Michigan and finally to Texas.
Gilbert proudly served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, where he met the love of his life, Maria, during technical school. They married on November 21, 1975, sharing just shy of 50 years together full of laughter, love, and playful teasing.
He is preceded in death by his mother, brother, and sister. He is survived by his beloved wife Maria; their children Jason Montes (Alice) of Lubbock, TX and Rizzy Olivares (Donovan) of Allen, TX; and his cherished grandchildren: Ondraus Moreno, Jacob Olivares, Jeremiah Montes, Abbie Montes, and Naia Moreno. Even his grand-dogs, Kujo and Chloe, adored him.
After retiring from the military, Gilbert worked in sales at Sears and Conn's, always providing for his family and instilling a strong work ethic in his children. He enjoyed bingo, gambling at the casinos, road trips, family visits, and grilling on hot days. He was a Sci-Fi and CNN enthusiast – he was also a secret shopping fanatic - especially during Christmas, his favorite holiday. He would never admit to being a shopper, but there is always a cool, unopened gadget in the house because it was on sale and it was a good deal!
Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM, both held at Grace Funeral Home. After the service, burial will take place at Peaceful Gardens. A meal will be provided following the burial-please join us at South Plains Church of Christ.
Gilbert's life was defined by love, laughter, and generosity. He was a man who gave freely, loved deeply and lived fully.
