Obituary published on Legacy.com by Castillo Funeral Home on Feb. 18, 2026.
Gilbert N. Peña
San Antonio, Texas
Gilbert N. Peña, 85, entered eternal rest on February 2, 2026, at his home in San Antonio. He was born on December 6, 1940, to Juan Antonio Peña and Antonia Garza Peña.
A proud product of Edgewood schools, Gilbert enlisted in the United States Army at just 17. He served in Korea and later at Fort Polk as a mechanic during the Vietnam War. Few knew that during his service he also played softball for the Army-pitching a remarkable no hitter in his very first game.
Upon returning home, Gilbert married the love of his life, Maria Luisa Montoya, in 1960. Together they built a beautiful family and raised three children: Mary Lou, Yvonne, and Gilbert II.
He was blessed with eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, his parents, and his siblings John, Richard, Alex, Paul, Yolanda, and Bertha. He is survived by his children and two sisters, Edna Martin and Maria Luisa Peña.
Services
Visitation will be held at Castillo Funeral Home on February 15 from 4 – 8 PM.
The Holy Rosary will be recited at 6 PM.
The burial will take place on Monday, February 16, and an interment at San Fernando Cemetery III.
Thank you.
Please crop the top of the hat where it reads Happy New year.
Thanks.
