Gilberto Antonio Valcarcel Velazquez was born January 24, 1945 to Antonio Valcarcel and Maria D. Velazquez in San Juan, Puerto Rico, living to the age of 80 until his death on April 19, 2025 in Orlando, Florida, United States. He traveled somewhat regularly during his service in the United States Army between three different continents, honorably retiring from being a cannon specialist on May 31, 1997. He only had one other sibling, his sister Awilda Valcarcel.
He was born and raised in the local area of his island, marrying Evelyn Valcarcel on the faithful day of December 26, 1970. They would enjoy 55 years together until his death, often spending their time together going out to shop or spend time with friends. With his wife and three daughters, Gilberto would travel between Puerto Rico, the United States mainland, and Germany; only traveling by himself to Vietnam and Korea when he was called to duty. During his Army career, he received 12 weeks of military education and earned a total of 14 decorations, including two Purple Hearts and a medal for his time in Vietnam. His peers and superiors would give nothing but high praise to Gilberto throughout his career, garnering respect and admiration everywhere he went.
Gilberto was born Catholic, but he, along with his wife, would convert to Protestantism later on in his life. He attended numerous services at the local Spanish-speaking church with his wife, and remained a devout believer when it became too difficult for the two of them to walk. Other activities he indulged in was gardening and experimenting with technology. Gilberto grew and maintained a beautiful garden for many years in his retirement, often being found outside when he wasn’t cooking or watching television. He was tech savvy, proudly owning a Windows Vista, upgrading his voice recorder to have more space, and keeping track of bills digitally during a time where personal computers were still a mystery to the average person.
Gilberto is survived by his wife, Evelyn Valcarcel; his three daughters, Myrels Mari Valcarcel, Wanda Annette Adair, and Sashalyn Carranza; and seven grandchildren, Giovanni Antonio Valcarcel, Angela Raquel Tinitigan, Arianna Mari Carranza, Isaiah Day Carranza, Sofia Annette Carranza, Mikayla Joye Adair, and Robert Eugene Adair, III.
He will be remembered by his family as a brave soldier, a loving husband, a compassionate father, and the most wonderful grandfather.
