Gladys "Guita" Camacho, a beacon of unwavering love and joy, passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on the morning of December 31, 2025, in
New York, NY. Born on July 11, 1923, in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico to Dominga Olivera and Alfredo Rodriguez. Guita's radiant spirit and infectious laughter touched the hearts of all who knew her throughout her 102 years of life.
Guita's journey through life was one of compassion and service. As a factory worker, she dedicated herself to supporting her family with unwavering resolve. Her entrepreneurial spirit later led her to own a women's clothing store, where she connected with her community through fashion and friendship. Guita's heart for service extended beyond her professional endeavors; she was a cherished presence in local community centers, helping those in need with a warm smile and open arms.
Her home was a sanctuary for many, as Guita became known for taking in homeless individuals and children, offering them the warmth and security they lacked. Her care for neighbors and friends, especially the ill and elderly, was a testament to her boundless compassion. Guita's visits to nursing homes, where she would sit, talk, and sometimes sing with residents, brought comfort and joy to many.
A devout Catholic, Guita found solace and strength in her faith. She was an active member of her church and sang in the church choir, uplifting others with her melodic voice. Her interests were as rich and varied as the life she led. From playing bingo and cards to frequenting Atlantic City, Guita knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures. Her talents in sewing and embroidery were only matched by her prowess in the kitchen...her specialties being her Puerto Rican Pasteles, Coquito and her "Guita Fritas". Guita loved dancing to Latino music, a passion that was only rivaled by her love for laughter and telling jokes. Guita's laughter was most vibrant when she shared stories and jokes. She cherished the times spent in theaters, watching movies and shows, and her curiosity and love for culture were satisfied through her travels and museum visits. Her rendition of "Happy Birthday" was precious and beloved, a gift fondly remembered by all the family and friends lucky enough to experience it.
Guita had a passion for gardening, that was not merely a hobby but an expression of her love for creation, as evidenced by the stunning garden she cultivated in front of her building in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This garden, blooming with big, beautiful, and her favorite light blue flowers, Hydrangeas, which she planted and nurtured. Her garden became a symbol of her care and dedication to the beauty of life, mirroring the way she tended to her relationships and community. To know Guita was to know the embodiment of love, friendship, and faith.
Guita's love for her island home of Puerto Rico remained a constant throughout her life. She would often regale family, friends and neighbors with enchanting stories of her homeland, sharing pictures and memories with a fondness that was contagious. Her trips back to Puerto Rico were one of the highlights of her life, where she reconnected with her roots and the culture she held so dear.
Guita's family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her loving daughter Elizabeth, her sons John David and Eduardo along with his husband Erik. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren James and his wife Desi, Dakota and her husband Will, Carlos and his wife Virginia, and John and his partner Jason. The family circle grew with her great- grandchildren Brandon and his wife Emily, Kyan, and Indira, as well as her bonus granddaughter Kori and her husband Bobby and bonus great-grandchildren Katiya, Sean, Justin, and TJ.
Guita's personal life was graced with love, having been married twice, first to the father of her children, David Baez, and then to her late husband, Enrique Camacho, with whom she shared many happy years. Her best friend, Elsa Velez, was like a sister to her, and their bond remains a beautiful memory. Though Elsa passed away too soon, Guita always carried her in her heart, and they are now reunited in heaven. Guita also joins her brothers, sisters and dear friends.
Guita's life was an embodiment of love, friendship, and faith. She was the epitome of a life well-lived, and her legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. As we bid farewell to Gladys "Guita" Camacho, we celebrate a life that was truly a gift to us all. Her spirit will forever dance in the hearts of her family and friends.
