Gladys A. Croteau (Prentis), of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, at the age of 89. She was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas Prentis and Louise Prentis (Wolboltt).
Born in
Weymouth, Massachusetts, Gladys married the love of her life, Jeffery J. Croteau, Sr., on July 2, 1955. Together they shared 65 devoted years of marriage and raised a family built on love, warmth, and friendship. Gladys worked at Grant's Department Store, Brooks Pharmacy, Chadwick's of Boston, and the Bridgewater Credit Union. Her most cherished role, however, was that of a devoted mother to six children.
Gladys and Jeffery began raising their family in Somerville in 1956 before settling in Bridgewater in 1969, where they made their lifelong home. Gladys was best known for her kind spirit and her ability to be everyone's friend. When not caring for her family, she enjoyed attending her TOPS group on Tuesday evenings, where she formed many lasting friendships. She also loved crafting with her niece and daughter, attending craft shows, cooking, baking, and crocheting. Family gatherings were especially dear to her, including the annual Labor Day celebrations and cherished Christmas parties. Gladys was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan, always cheering on her favorite players.
Gladys was the loving mother of Jane McCaul and her husband Barry of Maine; the late James Croteau of Florida; Judith Croteau of Bridgewater; Jeffery Croteau Jr. of Texas; Janet Icenogle and her husband William of Florida; and Joseph Croteau of Taunton. She was a proud grandmother to James, Candace, Scott, Faith, Christina, Jeffery III, Katrina, and Tiffany, and a loving great-grandmother to many. She is also survived by her brother, Teddy Prentis and his wife Pauline of Virginia. Gladys was predeceased by her sisters, Nancy Hoffses and Jane Smalley, and her brother, Bill Prentis.
Gladys will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and the love she shared so freely with all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-6 PM at Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 98 Bedford Street in Bridgewater. A Funeral Service will follow in the funeral home at 6 PM.
