Glen Harlan was born in Nevada Mo on July 29, 1933, at the home of his grandparents, to Glen Dening Hill and Verna Montez Hofmann Hill.
Glen lived in Drexel all his life. He attended 1st and 2nd grade at Maple Grove, a one room school house. Maple Grove closed and he completed the remainder of his schooling at Drexel. Glen Harlan would ride his horse to his grandparents' house in town, where he'd put the horse in the barn and walked to school from there. During his high school years, he often spent his lunch hours playing pool at the pool hall on Main St. He spoke of playing basketball and running around with his good friends Dean and Herbie who simply knew him as "Hill".
In his youth, he helped his Uncle Floyd with the Hill Road Show by setting up the tent and chairs for patrons to come watch movies as they traveled around to small towns. Glen Harlan also spent a lot of time at the roller-skating rink in Drexel and was a flawless skater -frontwards and backwards.
In 1954, he served in the Army for 18 months and was stationed in Yokohama, Japan. He was trained to be an anti-air craft gun mechanic, but he "got in good" with the battery Commander when he could run a bulldozer so he became a track vehicle mechanic. Glen received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. After the Army he enrolled in college at the University of Missouri and attended the College of Agriculture. Glen Harlan did not have a vehicle while attending college so he hitchhiked back forth between Columbia and Drexel.
On March 1, 1958, Glen Harlan married Arlene Deloris Shipley at the Southfork Baptist Church. They started their home at the farm that was purchased from Glen Harlan's Great Uncle John and Aunt Emile Cory. When they married, friends came to their house to give them a "shivaree". In 1975, they built their new home and lived there for 50 years and were married for 67 years.
Glen Harlan's true calling was farming. He started farming with his father and they created Hill Farms Inc. From 1958 to today, Glen Harlan saw many changes in agricultural practices and experienced many agricultural economic ups and downs. He received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Cass County in 1964 and 1966, the University of Missouri Outstanding Farmer Award in 1967, and the Bates County Conservation Farmer of the Year Award in 1980.
Outside of farming, Glen Harlan was involved in many community organizations and served on many boards. He served as President of the Drexel School Board, was a member of the Drexel Lions Club, the Drexel Community Fire Protection District, the Sharon Cemetery board, a director for Bank of Drexel/Bank 10 and was a charter board member of the Cass Bates Rural Water District #12 serving for 26 years.
Even between the farming and community service he found time to travel with Arlene and attend many activities for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Glen Harlan loved to go to Silver Dollar City and listen to all the music throughout the park. He loved to watch people and would just disappear to explore on his own-probably to aggravate Arlene.
Glen Harlan was preceded in death by his wife Arlene, his parents, and an infant son Robert Lee Hill. He is survived by a sister, Jessie (Kay) Lacy of Drexel MO, a son Timothy Hill and wife Bonnie of Drexel MO and daughter Kristie Fisher and husband Russell of Harrisonville MO; Three granddaughters, Tiffeny Manson and husband Dusty of Louisburg KS, Lacey Domnick and husband Nathan of Harrisonville MO, Megan Krogen and husband JB of Frontenac KS. Seven great grandchildren, Taylor Manson, Gavin Manson, Brylee Manson, Carter Manson, Christian Krogen, Zoey Domnick and Lyra Domnick. A brother-in-law Stephen Champlin of Amsterdam MO and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
